Help me identify a movie circa 80s or 90s

Help me identify this movie. As I recall it, there was a scene in a restaurant or bar in which a man was talking to a woman and asked her why people get married. She responded with some traditional answers about love and partnership, and he said that wasn’t it at all. He said that we get married to have someone give a testimony to our lives - or something to that effect.

At the time it really hit me hard, and my summary above really doesn’t do it justice.

My recollection is that it was a murder mystery, and that the man was the detective on the case and the woman was the wife of the victim. Or maybe it was a movie about a woman who had an affair or several affairs and the man was questioning her about that. Either way it was a dark movie and the conversation was not a flirtatious one. My wife remembers it as a musical or dance movie with Susan Sarandon.

My guess is that the movie was released in the late 80s or early 90s. I’m counting on the SDMB to come through for me.

Hmmm. . . Bull Durham? I can’t find a marriage quote but there’s a lot of talk about relationships in bars in that one, and Susan Sarandon.

Sea of Love with Al Pacino?

Shall We Dance, maybe? It’s a rom com and doesn’t fit your memory of a dark movie, but it does have Susan Sarandon.

Was there a scene like that in “A Perfect Murder” (1998) with Michael Douglass and Gwyneth Paltrow with David Suchet playing the role of the hard nosed detective?

What about White Palace, with Sarandon and James Spader (1990)?
