Actually it had live action parts for the characters of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and a girl, probably Becky, but the background was cartoon(?). Maybe they were traveling on ship on a river? Very vague memory here.
I could have sworn Johnny Whitaker was Tom, but I’m probably mixing it up with the movie Tom Sawyer that he was in. IMDB doesn’t have anything resembling this under his name.
Perhaps I am remembering something that was a smaller part of a variety show, like “Danger Island” was part of Banana Splits. Or maybe its the result of mixed memories about other stuff.
For years I thought the show I remembered about the Giant Robot that could launch missiles from his fingertips was a mixed up memory of shows like Ultraman and Space Giants, til the web came along and confirmed the existence of Johnny Sokko. What a relief that was!
It was 'The New Adventures of Huck Finn". Seems Tom, Huck, and Becky were on the run from Injun Joe, and they got lost in Injun Joe’s cave, which turned out to be a portal into another dimension, which led the kids into a different cartoon milieu every week. And every week, the villain on their adventure would be an animated Injun Joe (playing the role of a bad guy appropriate to the milieu, of course).
Injun Joe (and the voice of all the villains) was played by the late Ted Cassidy (Lurch fromm The Addams Family).
Oh, and because you’re from Kansas, I will recall for you a really stupid joke. The kid were wandering around in a sandstorm, surrounded by orange sand. Tom wondered out loud where they were, and Huck said “I think we’re in Kansas, because on maps of the United States, where all the states are in different colors, Kansas is always orange.”
And checking some sites about this show verifies that I must have seen it as part of the Banana Splits show, since its original airing was a year before I was born. Thanks again for helping me to validate this memory.
Would you believe that the dopey Kansas joke actually is a variation of one of Mark Twain’s own jokes? Of course it’s funnier the way Twain tells it. See Chapter Three of TOM SAWYER ABROAD. Huck and Tom are flying in a balloon and Huck insists that they haven’t crossed over into Indiana yet, because Indiana is pink on the map.
Yay! Banana Splits! I loved that show so much! Arabian Nights, Danger Island, Tom, Huck and Becky! and oooh those hot little Sour Grapes Gang girls… sighs
lalalala LALALALA lalalala LALALALA One banana two banana three banana four…
“… Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more!”
I loved that show, and The New Adventures of Huck Finn was one of my favourite segments. (I can almost still hear the TNAoHF theme song. I’ve got the melody but not the words. Something about a steamboat, IIRC.)
“Uh-oh! Chongo!” Yeah, there was that one too (whatever it was called) with “Michael” Vincent.
Hey, djxiii: You’re in Surrey? A friend of mine wants to move to Canada. Know anyone who’d want to marry him? (Yes, a friend! Not me.)

Thanks for the link. The audio on the Huck Finn theme is poor, and I can’t make out what-all he’s singing; but it was great to hear it again.
The theme for Mission Magic brought back memories too. There’s a cartoon that nobody ever talks about! Indeed, I don’t remember enough about it to talk about it. But as a kid, I liked the theme song.
