So, I’ve been kicking this around for a few months now, but the recent “ID this song” threads I’ve participated in helped convince me it would be fun and worth the time (to me) to have a blog where I could write about the music I listen to and the people who make it.

As many of you know, I primarily listen to thrash/metal/punk/garage rock, with an occasional weird noise album thrown in, so that’s prolly what I’ll be writing about.

The thing is, I can’t come up with a name I like for the blog.

Thanks to the new game and to Metalocalypse, “brutal” is oversaturated atm. “Metal” is already incorporated into about 6 billion blog names/websites, and lots of other stereotypical words associated with the genre(s) are just lame as shit.

I have a handful of names I’ve come up with, but what I’d love is if I could get suggestions here that I could take with me to my next brainstorming session with Blue Elk and some other friends. Then I plan to come back to the SD with a short enough list to make a poll and see what the consensus is here. Then I’ll likely ignore everything because something pops into my head, and I’ll name the blog that.

Names don’t need to even reference metal or music or anything, as long as they are memorable and don’t suck.

I don’t wanna bother with a poll, since I’m pretty sure that only like 5 or 9 or 11 people would bother answering it and reading it, but I’ve narrowed it down to 2 names now, and even tho I’m already partial to one of them, I thought I’d like some feedback.

Which of these two titles do you like most?

BDR sounds like it would be about skiing/snowboarding - I get that that is a passion of yours via your username, but unless you plan to comingle that topic with music, it feels confusing…

I am totally not your target audience, but love “Poor Impulse Control.” The other, as WordMan says, sounds more like a snowboarding blog than a music blog.

Well, I really like PIC as well, but there’s some potential problems.

For one, there’s already a blog called that:

No idea what the blog is about, as it’s very poorly designed and difficult to read, but it doesn’t seem to be about music (even tho the second article uses a line from Golden Earring’s Radar Love as it’s title). Best I can figure is it’s somebody’s online diary.

I also found this thing which may or may not be some kind of blog.

I seem to recall Uncle Cecil saying that titles can’t be copyrighted. Can they be trademarked? Can I use the title if someone else is already using it?

Also, BDR has snowboarding overtones, yes, until you know about this incident:

Black Diamond (1898-1929) was an Indian elephant owned by the Al G. Barnes Circus.

Weighing nine tons, he was believed to be the largest Indian elephant in captivity. A good worker but prone to fits of temper, he was generally kept chained to two calm female elephants during parades through the towns the circus visited. On October 12, 1929, while being unloaded in Corsicana, Texas, Black Diamond went on a rampage, injuring his long-time former trainer, H. D. (Curley) Pritchett, and killing Pritchett’s current employer, Eva Speed Donohoo (or Donohue).[1]

Ms. Donohoo was not the first person Black Diamond had killed, so after his recapture he was deemed too dangerous to continue with the circus and the decision was made to put him down. Numerous ideas were floated but his size made most of them unworkable; the final decision was to shoot him. As many as 50, perhaps more than 100, shots were required before Black Diamond died.

His mounted head, on display in a museum in Houston, Texas for many years, was eventually acquired by a local Corsicana businessman, who had been a five-year-old boy in the crowd that day in October 1929.[citation needed] Allegedly, one of his feet was made into a pedestal for a bust of Hans Nagle, Houston’s first zookeeper, the man who fired the final shot that brought Black Diamond down.

In 2006, singer/songwriter Al Evans wrote “Black Diamond’s Song,” a lament from the pachyderm’s perspective.

So BDR has it all, too: a behemoth runs amok, thrashes established authority, proves to be damned hard to kill, and then has a song written about him. I mean, it’s like exactly my life’s story if I were a snowboarding elephant who lived in Texas! :dubious:

Well, I’ve tried to register PIC on a couple of different blog sites, but guess what? They all appear to be operated by Google. How do I know this? Because after having started an account at blogspot. com, when I tried to start a new account at blogger.com and blog.com and a couple others, they all said “invalid password for that email address” or something similar. When I used my blogspot account password, I got in. And since there are already a couple of Poor Impulse Control blogs there, I can’t use that name, at least not easily.

If I get my own domain name, would I need some kind of software to do easy blog formatting? Or would I then have to resort to doing the pages myself, essentially from scratch or with a simple template design? It’s been a long time since I did extensive HTML coding, and frankly I don’t really want to have to do it again.

I signed up at Wordpress.com, only to be told that the domain poorimpulsecontrol.wordpress.com is already in use. Do they have software that they sell to do it for you, or do you just have to use their site?
