His racing name was Kansas Stinger. As he has obviously suffered abuse, we don’t want him to have a name that is at all related to his racing career, but we’re struggling to come up with a good alternative. So far, we’ve thought of Eddie, Simon, Sam, Roscoe, Nigel, Rusty and Rowdy. Since he looks so much like Maxx, we’re open to their names matching in some way, but we’re pretty short on creativity as of late.
So how about it - any ideas on a good name for our new baby?
As I said in the OP, we don’t want to name him anything associated with racing, since it is evident he was abused at some point. Also, as he was constantly housed in a kennel of ~ 75 other dogs who were only out of their crates to exercise or race, I doubt he was singled out and called by name all that often. He certainly does not respond to Stinger at all.
He may just be shy. As I said in the other thread, being shy or skittish is not necessarily a sign of abuse. Shyness can be a genetic trait, and if you add not being handled enough during the 8-12 week developmental period into the mix, you’ve got yourself a shy dog. It happens with other breeds too.
And it’s very unlikely he was ever called by his racing name - he probably had a kennel name, but without speaking to his trainer or breeder, you won’t know what that was.
His daddy’s Irish - how about a nice Celtic name? Ennis means ‘from the Island.’ Rory and Rowan (or Rohan) are all derivations of the Celtic word ‘red.’
I would believe that he was not handled enough, if it weren’t for the fact that we also own his littermate, who is quiet but friendly and not at all shy or jumpy. The same has been reported of his mother and sister. We’ve spoken to his last trainer several times (he was instrumental in getting Stinger to us). He also suspected a history of abuse at his previous kennel, which was one of the reasons he was was fond of Stinger and tried to hold on to him as long as he could. In his words, Stinger is “tender-hearted and needs a lot of love to get over his past”.
And yes, his kennel name was also Stinger. Apparently, he just won’t answer to it.
How about Power, so you can have Maxx & Power? Then you can tell people that you got their names off of a hair dryer, like with Homer Simpson.
Congratulations on adopting him! Greyhounds are the sweetest dogs in the world.
Interesting. If his race record on Greyhound Data is accurate, he wasn’t at his second-to-last track for very long. Some hounds are so sensitive, though, it doesn’t take much. One of ours would hide in the bathroom at the sound of a raised voice - not even an angry one, just a loud one. And not directed at him, either - he was so good it was never necessary to speak above a normal tone of voice to him. I miss that dog - he’s been gone almost 10 years now and I still think about him almost every day.
I like Maxx and Power. Kind of like Maximum Power, which would be a great race name (I’m sure that’s taken already!).
I’ve always wanted to name a greyhound Jato (for the acronym JATO = Jet Assisted TakeOff) but that just hasn’t happened yet.
