The “ancient secret” that makes the guardians undefeatable in battle is their (sexual) purity. The thief was able to defeat them and steal the jewels by getting them to violate their vows of purity, which she knew to do because of the slogan carved over the idol. By changing the carving, the next thief won’t know how to defeat them.
Googling around, I found this discussion - it appears to be a rip on the remake of Wicker Man.
