Help name a whale!

Greenpeace or something or other wants you to vote for a whale name.

Before you vote, I’ll give you one guess as to which name is the current leader.

Hehe. Hehehe.

You can guess what I voted for.

Huh? “Shamu” isn’t a choice? Oh well, I picked Humphrey.

What with the Japanese out hunting whales, I’d have figured the natural name for a whale would be “Target.” That being said, I voted for the obvious choice, because it wasn’t nearly as crappy as the others offered.

I don’t get it. Who’s Humphrey supposed to be mocking? Hubert Humphrey? Was he really fat or some such?

I voted for Echo.

But the leading name is pretty good. I hope they follow through with it.

Yeah, I wanna see Katie Couric try and say it with a straight face.

Humphrey.
It was huge news here on the west coast. Perhaps it was less well publicized back east.

I voted for “Paikea”, the name of the whale in “Whale Rider”.

Ohh. I never heard of him. He sounds like a cute whale, but I think this new whale deserves his own name. So I’m still thinking.

ETA: Why Atticus? I know, he was a great character. It just seems like a bizarre name to pull out for a whale.

Mr. Splashy Pants took a clear lead after it hit the intrawebs at various Tubes 2.0 websites. Here is an article that discusses it, along with some accusations of gaming the vote.

I voted for Cian, because that’s my youngest nephew’s name (although spelled differently).

I wanted to vote for Fudgie, but it’s not on the list.

Also not on the list is AHHHooooo-squeeeeeeee-eeee-oom.

According to the OP’s link, that means “humpback whale.” Seems rather uninspired.

Hey, my mom had a cat named Neko.

Come again?
I, of course, voted for Mr. Splashy Pants.

Am I totally thick? (don’t anwer that!) What is the leading name? I didn’t see one…

Mr. Splashy Pants, still in the lead with a robust 74% of the vote.

Depends on your point of view. Paikea is a revered tribal ancestor, who came to NZ on the back of a taniwha. The whales are named after him. Inspiring enough for me.

I’d have thought the “Mr Splashy Pants” choice was uninspired, myself. Doesn’t really matter, though, if it ends up raising awareness of the whales.

I voted for Moya, but only 'cos that’s the name of the Leviathan in Farscape.
