My PC has sound, but it lost it’s friendly, little “click” when clicking on a link, etc. How do I get this feature back? We miss it.
-
Start->Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices
-
Click on “Sounds” tab
-
In “Program events”, scroll down until you see “Select”, click it.
-
The “Sounds” drop down will activate. Click drop down and select your desired sound. You probably want the one called “Windows XP Menu Command.wav”
-
Click the play button (looks like a right-pointing triangle) to test your sound.
-
If everything seems good, click “OK”.
ETA: If you don’t have any windows event sounds at all, you may want to select the “Windows Default” sounds scheme first.
Turn speakers on.
Note that if you switched to Firefox, you will not hear this sound when clicking on a link in your browser (maybe you can set it to make that sound when you click, I dunno…). Windows Explorer (your file browser) will still make this noise when choosing a file, but not Firefox.
Obviously this is best solved by a small piezoelectric crystal and direct bone-to-bone conduction of sound. This is effected by wearing the crystal in a small box on the head, in the manner of a Jewish tefillin. I even have the exploitation worked out: “Click on, apply directly to the forehead! Click on, apply directly to the forehead! Click on, apply directly to the forehead!”
Next step is the knife, if Peter Cropes doesn’t sue me first.
The only click I have ever heard of from my mouse. I never knew you could get a ckicking sound through your speakers. Sounds like a rather annoying feature if one was to use it.
If Terminus Est’s suggestion doesn’t turn on the sound you’re looking for, you might also try again, this way:
-
In “Program events”, scroll down until you see “Windows Explorer”, then “Start Navigation”, click it.
-
The “Sounds” drop down will activate. Click drop down and select your desired sound. You probably want the one called “Windows XP Start.wav”.
That will turn on the (annoying, to me anyway) click sound you get anytime you click a link in IE. That’s one of the first things I turn off when I set up a new machine, but DSFDF, I guess.
I hear that sound constantly while surfing the net, not just when clicking a link. What does “Start Navigation” mean other than clicking a link?
