A month or two ago a religion thread contained a quote, I believe attributed to Jesus, that in effect said:
Your religion should be a private matter, that being flashy of grandiose about it is contrary to the teachings.
This is reaaally paraphrased (duh) but I needed to refer to it a day or so ago and don’t know how to even begin a search for something with so little info.
So of course I turn to the collective mind of the SDMB hive.
Does this seem even remotely familiar to anyone?
Thanks
V5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
V6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
(Matthew 6:1-9) 1"Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you
5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
You guys are the BEST! I knew someone would know the answer. This is indeed the one mentioned in the past thread. I have been in a recent discussion with someone that believes in broadcasting every aspect of ones spiritual leanings. I have always felt that spirituality is a personal and private matter but having something to relate it to is better.
Thanks all! You never cease to amaze!
I post on another board with a particularly annoying and verbose Christian. It’s surprising how many threads she can turn into chapter and verse lectures. When I posted that verse once, she just littered the board with a triple long post about how I and everyone else misinterpret the verse/chapter/book.
Our 4yo’s preschool has started summer school and a flier says they can wear a school logo shirt or a “Christian Shirt”, the latter being a t-shirt sketch in the corner of the page.
In the body of the text it says “School shirts or t-shirts with no offensive cartoons or sayings” which to me introduces the idea of a shirt that is something other than a school logo or a christian shirt, since I doubt they are putting such caveats on the christian shirts.
So we send him to school in a new pair of basketball type shorts of a satin looking material and a plain white tee shirt. No offensive stuff, right?
No.
We are told this is unacceptable as it is neither logo or christian. When asked to explain the “offensive” statement (is this intended to eliminate the offensive christian shirts?), they offer none and repeat the requirements. I personally find the flashy, in-your-face religious stuff to be in poor taste. So, as of Monday, he will be going in a christian white tee with Matthew 6: 1-9 written on the chest and they can look it up for themselves.
This is some kind of religious school or church-run program, not an actual state-run type of summer school, right? In which case, you’re a paying customer and can simply opt out if this policy annoys you?
I have only heard of schools BANNING overtly Christian shirts, the idea of REQUIRING one in this country (except maybe Kansas?) is jaw-dropping.
Ah…good old private Christian school…I went to one from preschool to eigth grade. They used to put kids in this metal wardrobe thing and yell at them from the outside
…and one kid I remember got suspended for wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt on free-dress day. Then another time, a student wanted to play an instrumental version of Stairway to Heaven (why was it always Led Zep?) during an assembly, and they tore up his sheet music and threw it in the trash. Then, BAM, I get accepted to an inner-city arts high school, and at the first guitar concert, the principal does a performance of, yep, Stairway.
Come to think of it, my experiences in middle school probably explain why I am now Buddhist.
What dorks they are.
I actually cannot come up with the right derogatory term for them since it is below “jerK” or “asshole” but stronger than “idiot”.
I love your response.
When you find out who laughs out loud on reading it, you ought to find out who the people you will love for the next 10 years will be… also the people with whom you don’t want to socialize. I mean the ones who are offended because it’s not funny.
Man! I love that idea!! Kinda mad at myself for missing it. Good one!
Yes, it is a Christian school Pre-K through 12 but it’s not Catholic. We were kinda without acceptable options as to class size, classrooms and curriculum compared to day-cares and others in the area. We felt that if there were too much indoctrination we were up to the challenge of gently balancing it.
We may have been wrong.
Mommy picked him up from school one day and he was terribly upset because they told him his Father was in Heaven and he thought I was dead.
We had a bit of a battle because they would not let these little ones (3-4) bring a blanket or a stuffed animal to school in a backpack for nap time. They had to lay on a cot without cover and no bear when sleeping somewhere other than home with parents for the first time in their lives. That was a fight we eventually won.
In K-3 the was required to wear a school uniform, slacks and a polo type shirt with the school name embroidered on the left chest. However, they had none in his size. They were two or three sizes too big and hung to his knees. So we bought polo shirts in the correct colors and size and sent him in.
Wrong.
Must be a logo shirt. The fact that hey could not provide them seemed lost on them. I contacted a friend that does this type of embroidery work and emailed a scan and scale of the logo. They looked great and, if anything, were a better quality than the ones sold by the school. All’s well, huh?
Wrong.
“These are not school issued uniforms”. CRAP! Well, he’ll continue to wear them until the school makes his size available and not like some others were there are two available but not enough to get through even a single week.
They sent home a flier about back packs and lunch boxes that said roughly “They must be plain or have a Christian theme. There can not be any Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles or any obviously evil designs on them” Obviously EVIL?
Well, sorry. This is kinda a touchy subject with me (if you couldn’t tell) and we only keep him there because the academics and social skills gained outweigh the hassles (but not by much).
This is his last couple of months in this school and may be a bit better as we are in the summer program and it has more play time and a little bit less strict guidelines.
I think they will be relieved to see me and Mrs.Nic go.
Although the school/church may not follow the liturgical calendar, a plain white shirt is very apropriate during Eastertide as white is the color of Easter.
