Help with Error Messages with Outlook 2002

When I open Outlook 2002 in my old machine, I get tweo of the same-type (I think) error messages. The words common to both are in plain type. The others are in boldface:

The add-in

c:\progra~\mcafee.com\vso\outscan.dll

could not be installed or loaded

** C:\Program Files\ViRobotXP\VrCli.dll**
If you can tell me how to get rid of these messages, I would appreciate it.

If this is a Registry problem, I have “Windows XP Hacks” so if you do, too, and can direct me to the proper Chapter or page number that addresses these kind of problems, I would appreciate it.

(I have long since deleted McAfee software, but the ViRobotXP thing is a mystery.)

:smack:

tweo = two

Ok, if you want to play with the registry, the problem is probably in there somewhere. Just fire up Start - Run - Regedit and do a search for those names. Do a partial name search if that doesn’t work. If the key names make sense for the problem, you can probably delete them without much risk. Report back if you want advise.

If you have problems finding the key through that search, you can search for "Outlook and poke around or just use google to find where your Outlook registry entries are.

In HKEY LOCAL MACHINE
under SOFTWARE, I have a MCAFEE folder that expands to 4 folders,
Instant Purchase
McAfee Shared Components
McAfee Update Patch
Uninstaller

I have no McAfee software installed any more. Would it be safe to delete all the McAfee stuff mentioned above?

If you don’t have it installed, then yes, you can delete. I am not convinced that would solve your problem but it is worth a try.

I would think the reference is coming from an Outlook registry key.

I got the answer.

Before I opened this thread, I bought Registry Mechanic online, installed it and ran it. It cleared up hundreds of Registry glitches (so it said), but the two I wanted most to be dealt with, weren’t. So I emailed the company and here’s the Reply. from Nick Mather, Customer Support Representative at PC Tools

**As Outlook is not one of our products we are unable to provide support for it. However I have done a quick search for you to locate some information to help you. You can stop Outlook loading addins by doing the following (taken from the outlook help file)

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.

  2. Click Advanced Options, and then click Add-In Manager.

  3. Remove the tick from the box next to that Add-In’s you wish to disable

  4. Click OK.

  5. Close Outlook
    **

It worked and I never had to go into the registry after all. There were two ticks in the Add-In Manager - one for each error message I was getting - and I simply unticked 'em. Bingo!

Needless to say, I thanked the man, effusively.

And thank you, Shagnasty, for your advice. I mean it. You’ve helped me a lot with my computer problems, and I hope you know appreciative I am.
