What ever happened to Herbert and Garner Ted Amrstrong and their World Wide Church of God. What were they about.

History of the Worldwide Church of God.

The Church has it that Armstrong’s views were “unusual”, and that the doctrines weren’t “biblical”. After he died in 1986, they had a change of opinion.

As the Worldwide Church of God criticized traditional Christianity, it also attracted criticism. Many people considered Herbert Armstrong to be the leader of a heretical cult. Today, the leaders of the Worldwide Church of God reject Armstrong’s doctrinal errors, but we do not hide our past. Rather, we acknowledge that our errors were deep and serious, but that Christ has rescued us from them.

So – the Church is still going, but not exactly to Armstrong’s plan.

I should have been more specific in my answer – I referred to Herbert Armstrong.

Garner Ted Armstrong has a Garnert Ted Armstrong Evangelical Association (and website) named after him.

I used to listen to Garner Ted Armstrong back in 1972-73 while I was getting ready for work. It was something to take my mind off more serious matters.

I hope that you don’t mind if I ask a question along a similar line. Does anyone know what became of the guy that was on the show The Doctor Is In? He was sort of a cross between an evangelist and a peacock. I remember he usually sat in a chair on a stage and wore lots of different hats – fireman’s hat, etc. He just talked and people called in and gave money, I think. But I was never sure what it was for. Weird and fascinating show!

If it’s the same guy I’m thinking of, his name was Gene Scott.

Back when Garner Ted Armstrong was with the organization, various booklets were published bearing cute titles such as A Whale of a Tale or the Dilemma of Dolphins and Duckbills!, Some Fishy Stories About Evolution, and A Theory for the Birds. The subject matter of each was self-evident. In these booklets, the reader was treated to beautiful color photographs and lavish descriptions by Armstrong of the duckbilled platypus, the dolphin, the angler fish, the lungfish, and the flicker woodpecker, among others. Humorous evolutionary scenarios were suggested to show how each animal could never have evolved.
