Let’s nip that one in the bud: it’s West
In the first season, we already saw New York destroyed by nuclear explosion by episode 2, which set the tone for the entire season. Nothing of similar import has happened so far this season. You have Hiro dickering around feudal Japan to no apparent purpose (he really needs to get back with Ando), Claire being flown off by not-Zach (by episode three last season she had been almost raped, killed, and laid open on an autopsy table), Matt playing nursemaid (last time he was on the trail of a gruesome serial killer). Something had better happen soon.
BTW, do the glasses worn by Stephen Tobolowsky’s character count as “horn rimmed”?
Oh sure, you can fanwank an answer to any plot hole if you try hard enough. The writers love it when the audience does the work for them. Even if Hiro couldn’t go back to the right time, we haven’t even seen him try. Remember, this is the same character who was concerned that he’d step on a bug and ruin the timeline. Now, he’s taking a fucking flame thrower to the space time continuum. And he does this just to cover his bases in case he can’t go back? Bullshit. And I’m sure the producers realize this, and in true Lucas fashion, will retroactively cover the plot hole with another plot hole, making the fans say “look they had a plan all along!”
If you want a snark free zone, go to TWoP. There you can talk endlessly about how hawt Peter is, how short Claire is, and how Mohinder and Matt make such a cute gay couple. Besides that, what is there to talk about? Gee, I wonder who the masked killer is. Maybe it’s Claude. Maybe it’s West. Gosh, Peter is hawt.
This is something I can agree with you on. We’ve had discussions and even a Pit thread on this topic. I think it’s some sort of runoff from TWoP. Certain Dopers love them, and they’re not going away.
They tend to go away on their own for the most part. The characters get tagged with nicknames until we can remember their actual names, then the usage tends to taper off. Notice the near-total lack in this season’s threads of such nicknames as “Telepacop” and “Cheerbleeder” and “Doppelbanger”? That’s because we all remember now that they’re Matt and Claire and Niki.
People bitching about them, now there’s something that doesn’t go away.
Cuckoorex, hon, I say this with all due concern … maybe you should switch to decaf?
NERD FIGHT!!!
How did I guess that you were a Star Wars “fan?”
Don’t piss me off. I have a level 40 Wizard.
Eh, I’m not sure I know what your cite is supposed to mean. And I don’t care enough to figure it out. I was just using Lucas as an example of retroactive plotting.
People get pissed when they can’t figure out who you’re talking about. Honestly, what the hell does “Smallville” mean? I’ve never seen Smallville. I figured that it probably referred to West because he can fly, and Smallville has to do with Superman. Right? “Telepacop” and “Mystery Sock” are cute, but the names that cross multiple TV shows need to stop. Some of us don’t watch that much TV.
I forgive you.
Damn hamsters.
Its’ a great essay explaining why Star Wars fans, and really any fans, can spend so much time bitching so loudly about something they are fans of. They love the idea, but hate what the writers/directors/etc. do with them. If you think about it, the majority of bitching both on this board and fandom as a whole comes down to “It should have happened my way because I’m right.” Its’ just the nature of the beast and it can be damn frustrating.
IMDB agrees with you on the main page, but not where I checked. What would be a definitive source?
On the NBC Heroes page:
The recap page for “Kindred”. Slide 8 states that his name is West.
I’m sorry I posted my comment about people griping because I really don’t want to have this argument again. I do agree that “Smallville” is a pretty poor nickname. I prefer “Luke Skystalker” myself, but since I know his name is “West” that’s what I intend to call him. As in, “I hope West flies himself into a jet engine” or “Man, that West character really sucks.”
I don’t care that much either way. As long as the nicknames are intuitively identifiable, whatever floats your boat. And I agree that West needs to die horribly.
I think fans bitch because they’re heavily invested and they care. That, or they’re just douchebags.
Let me be the voice of dissent : I loved this episode.
The only thing I still don’t care for is that Alejandro/Maya story line.
It really isn’t interesting (yet) and kind of annoying.
I love the Hiro storyline so far and to me it makes perfect sense that he is staying in this timeline until he is sure that it is resolved.
I don’t mind West that much (yet) and I thought the scene was cliched but still well done.
I think they are setting Peter up to become a bad guy, that is why he had the symbol on him.
I just don’t understand why the symbol suddenly fades away.
And I am actually happy Sylar is back as I really liked that character.
I really think some people need to watch season 1 again because they are making it out like the first season was SOOOO much better.
The bitching about every freaking tv-show on the SDMB is getting old really, really fast.
If people really dislike the show that much just… stop… watching.
The plot was not moving better last season. I dumped the show after 1 1/4 episodes, and was convinced to come back for the 5th. That’s when things picked up, and really got into full swing right before hiatus.
Next episode we’ll get a glimpse of the future where Cork will be destroyed by a nuclear explosion. And no one will care.
Does that mean that Bleeding Eyes girl has…LUPUS!!!
It’s *NEVER * Lupus!!!
