Heroes 5/7/07 - "The Hard Part"

Yeah, Mother Patrelli is possibly scarier than Sylar, Linderman, and Radioactive Ted combined.

I was almost liking Sylar in that kitchen sink drama at his momma’s house-until the scissors. Bad Gabriel!

I like is that the bad guy isn’t totally evil, even though he seems that way. Sylar was actually upset to learn that he might kill 3 million “innocents”. He probably wouldn’t blink at 3 million “heroes” because he doesn’t think they deserve their powers, but he actually regretted the idea of killing that many innocent people. He was looking for someone to stop him, too bad his mother was a nutbar (apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree) and unable to talk him down and Hiro just wasn’t ready to take him out.

I didn’t see that. What makes you think that? Please elaborate.

(BTW, one of the movie channels had the last X-Men movie on starting an hour before Heroes. That made the revelation of the girls powers (the same as one of Magnetos new helpers) especially lame and anti-climatic. Although, I could see how she could be instrumental in catching Sylar.)

Also, the whole “dangerous object being fought over by two people, then one staggering back in dumbfounded surprise, only to surprise the audience by revealing that the other one was actually killed” gimmick is about as cliche as they get.

Nathan Petrelli (he’s the politician, right?) thoroughly pisses me off. At the beginning of this saga I thought he had some balls. Well he does, but they’re being held by mama and Linderman. Damn man can’t think for himself, stupid lame shit head

Yeah, the “struggle over sharp object and one wrenches it out of the other’s grip then falls on it and is killed” cliche would have been better.

How did she get stabbed so high up and straight in? Granted Sylar is taller than her but it looked like he was pushing her arms down which should have resulted in her being stabbed lower and at an angle.

Suuuuuuudenly Sylarrrrrr! Is standing besiiiiide meeeeee!

I just wanted to pat the little guy on the head and tell him “Hey guy, you’re all right. You don’t have to kill a buncha people. You need a Coke?” But that’s probably my love of “So NoTorious” speaking again.

Waiting is the hardest part. Two days to go. Less, now.

Sylar is a twisted Clark Kent.

Nathan is a twisted Superman.

Sylar can fling objects around without touching them.

Mama Petrelli is so much like the candidate’s mama in The Manchurian Candidate that she’s scary. Take your pick, Angela Lansbury or Meryl Streep. She has that ruthless, controlling amorality.

I think Nathan will go decent on Mama, and she’ll replace him with Sylar.

Re Sylar not needing to kill heroes in order to absorb their powers – how else to explain how he negated Hiro’s power unless he has the same power as Peter? I guess Hiro’s second blink could have started time again, but I’m sure he blinked more than once when he stopped that car accident way back when. Blinking’s a reflex, hard to control.

Hiro could have consciously started time again, but it looked like Sylar’s eye movement surprised him.

Have we ever seen what Sylar does with the brains? Seen him with blood dripping from his mouth after he killed someone? Seen him dissect one or study it, even touch it? (I’ve missed a couple of episodes.)

It’s instinct for him to take things apart to see how they work, but maybe he didn’t have to do that with the heroes.

Sylar didn’t cancel Hiro’s power, Hiro lost his concentration. It’s been established before that he can’t always freeze time for very long.

I really like using phrase like “freeze time for very long.”

We don’t know that he negated Hiro’s power. As others have suggested, it could be that Hiro’s power merely faltered for a moment.

I just came in here to say that I fully expected Mama Petrelli to kiss Nathan full on the lips during that scene.

And when Suresh said that his sister was dead while he and Molly were looking at her picture, I expected Molly to say, “She’s not dead.”

But he wasn’t using TK, he was just trying to get the scissors away from her. She’s the one who went after him with the scissors. He didn’t want her to stab him and he certainly didn’t intend to kill her. He might have even seemed more upset about it if it weren’t for that fact that he’s just totally batshit insane.

And as for the scissors, I thought he’d melt them in his mother’s hands (but then would that burn her?).

This was not my favourite episode - it very much had the feeling of performing the function of moving the story forward and felt really disjointed to me. Oh well. They can’t all be gems.

I really like getting some insight into Sylar’s psyche. The crazy mother making him crazy was clichéd as all hell, too, of course, but I liked seeing his twisted rationale for doing what he does and his questionable morality (I don’t want to kill innocent people. I only kill people who deserve it.) Mohinder was wrong, though - Sylar has no regrets or remorse. He only was worried about what he might do. And not so much of that any more.

So, all the Heroes have to end up in New York, eh?

I thought so, too. And I figured she’d be a Super.

Was she? What’s her power?

I don’t remember. I’m terrible at remembering the fine details from this show.

Two other things:

  1. Peter sees the picture and goes “That’s Ted?”. IIRC, Peter has already met Ted (in the prison cell the same time he met Matt Parkman.)

  2. I awarded myself 20 Princess Show-Biz Points for recognizing Ellen Greene (aka Audrey from “Little Shop of Horrors”) as Sylar’s mom.
