Wow. LolaCocaCola, you’re saying that someone is cheap for not leaving a tip sometimes. Fair enough. You then call him names multiples times, incite other people to call him names, say he’s morally bankrupt, and basically just go on and on and on. I agree that he should tip, but you are the one who looks like an asshole in this thread. I know this is, as you keep saying, the Pit, but just because it’s not ‘real life’ doesn’t mean you’re not insulting and belittling a real person.
However, to whoever it was that provided the facts about the tax situation (apologies, I can’t search through the whole thread to check who you are), thanks. Knowing that, next time I’m in the US I will probably be more vigilant about tipping. The one and only time I visited the country as an adult I don’t remember if I tipped properly or not. I knew that tipping was more the custom in the US than it is in the UK, but didn’t know the extent to which the server relies on the tip. So thanks for eroding my ignorance on that subject.
Since the bottom half of your (entire) post indicates that you aren’t even aware of the tipping practices here in the States, I’m not sure you are even qualified to comment on the topic. But we sure are glad to see this thread has enlightened you somewhat. That’s what we are here for - to fight ignorance!

Why isn’t BlackKnight the asshole for expecting people to work for nothing? Even if it is sometimes, it’s not acceptable. And he is not exactly innocent of name-calling (and neither are YOU, for that matter!) Maybe if he said - you are right, there is no excuse for my not tipping when the service has been good, ever! The thread would’ve died days ago - but he keeps justifying his appalling behavior, hence the need to respond to his inane qualifications. I happily gave up on him, but then he ressurected the thread! But, you’re right - this is like beating a dead, cheap horse. He’s probably not going to change his ways no matter what we say.
IMHO it’s only the people with questionable tipping practices of their own who are defending BlackKnight here.

I suggest that if blalron or others want to discuss the tipping system and/or what to do about it, that they start a thread in Great Debates. I think it could be interesting.
Others in this thread have laid out the tipping situation pretty clearly, so I am, as I said, now fully aware of the US tipping practices. Now do I meet your criteria for qualification?
I don’t think the Pit is just for venting, it’s also for discussion of topics which might get too heated for GD. Your own thread is somewhere in-between the two - venting at one person and debating the whole tipping issue. I do expect stronger language in the Pit, but I also expect, as I’ve seen on many other threads, that if such strong language seems inappropriate then the user will be called on it. The level of your ire is what amazes me.
I have read the whole thread, partly to see how high your horse could go, and partly because I have an inconvenient complusion to read the complete thread if I read any of it at all. Thus I have noted that actually most of the people defending** Blackknight**'s position also state that they do tip. Are you calling them liars?

Either that, or you simply can’t read or comprehend what’s being said. There are really only two people on this thread of 7 pages who fully defend BlackKnight’s position - they are Smam and Mockingbird. They seem to feel that it is perfectly OK to stiff a waiter depending on your financial predicament at the time, so yes, IMHO they have questionable tipping practices themselves. Everyone else in this thread tips all the time unless (in some cases) the service was bad ~ which clearly indicates to me that stiffing someone if the service was good is not OK.
If someone argues the fact that people should have the right to do what they want with their money with regard to tipping, yet that very same person wouldn’t dream of stiffing a waiter if the service was good - then their argument is weak, IMO. Because even they realize that stiffing a waiter is morally wrong, which is the very point of this pit thread. So, in reality they are defending my position.
