Hey, Floridopers, ready for Jeanne?

Oh yay, my power just came back on! basks in air conditioning

Whoo-HOO! I just got power back about a half hour ago. It didn’t go off until about 10:45 last night, so I figure I’m pretty lucky. No cable yet, but that’s OK. My big worry was being able to meet my deadlines at work.

Last night was very scary. According to one of the local news stations, we had 80-90 mph winds here last night for a good couple of hours. There are tree branches and roof shingles everywhere, and part of my parking lot is now a lake. I heard on the radio last night that roofs collapsed on a couple of condos and townhomes up in Martin County.

I just talked to my mom over on the Gulf Coast. She said Jeanne’s heading for her now. She’s rushing to cook dinner now in case she needs to warm it up on the grill.

::sigh:: I just want these storms to end already.

Over here, we’re really more concerned with later today / tonight, when the eye returns to water. Projections are calling for Frances-style flooding, because the prevailing circulation for a storm in that position always pushes the water up into the bay and over the seawalls, as well as pushing bay water up into the rivers. Combined with an already thoroughly-saturated ground and a high water table, and it could get pretty bad again.

I just had lots of wind and rain, lights flickered but didn’t lose power this time.

If the pounding by hurricanes was some divine wrath over the outcome of the 2000 election then all those hurricanes should have headed directly to Tallahassee or anywhere Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris might be “hunkered down” (take a drink!).

By the way, Jeb needs to be impeached after his comment about so many hurricanes hitting a state hasn’t happened since 1800something in Texas. Jeb, this is Florida we’ve been through hell this summer and we don’t care about something that happened in Texas when less than 100,000 people lived there. Don’t pull that Texas did it first crap, if you love Texas so much, go back there.

Speaking of Jeb, he was having a hard time remembering what hurricane we were on, too. Maybe we should just call them ChaFraIvEanne? Why do they keep excluding Bonnie when they talk about the “4 hurricanes” was it because she wasn’t officially a hurricane anymore by the time she hit the state?

I was looking in my hurricane guide in the retired names section and saw that there was a Hurricane Roxanne in 1995. So apparently we got pretty far through the alphabet then, although we must not have had as many that made it to hurricanes and that hit land as we’ve had this year. I can’t really remember 1995, heck, I can barely remember early 2004.

By the way, you can add “it’s unprecedented!” or anytime someone remarks on how historical all these hurricanes are to the drinking game. I’m sorry Mr. Weather Guy but I’d rather wait until after I have survived the latest storm before being all impressed with the unprecedented history-making event.

in 1995 we got up to tanya on the list. i’m thinking 2004 will have more retired names than 1995.

i betting charlie, frances, ivan, and jeanne will be retired.

Tiramisu, it was 1800-something the last time four hurricanes hit the same state within one season, and yes, Bonnie was downgraded before she hit land, so that’s why she’s not included in the count.

I’m alive!

And I’ve got power!

quietly begins cleaning up all the poo on the walls

OK, we had Ivan, then Jeanne, and Lisa being mentioned. What happened to K?

We missed Frances, but we were here for Jeanne. We had to evacuate our apartment, so we stayed with friends in west Boynton Beach. They lost power around 10:30 last night and got it back this morning around 9. Our place is still without power as of about 5 this evening. Thank goodness our friends have a guest bedroom. We owe them big!

I didn’t realize so many of you live right in this area. How about a Dopefest after hurricane season ends?

Karl. Formed out in the mid-Atlantic and turned northeasterly. Currently projected to pass between Greenland and Iceland as an extratropical storm before eventually dissipating off the coast on Norway later this week.

Alive here also. Nothing exciting happened. The gutters did get ripped off the apartment building. It woke me from my nap. Stupid gutters. Other than that nothing.

[sub][sup]Stupid hurricane. Couldn’t have hit on Monday to close down work. No had to hit on the weekend and ruin my day off.[/sub][/sup]

Thanks Bambi!

Checking in. Jeanne made a right turn just before our house, so it didn’t get too bad, just a few downed trees and lots of wind, not even all that much rain it seems. I did have to drive down to Safety Harbor on Sunday morning to get the Boy, who slept over at a friend’s house. We never lost power (yet) this time, but the kids were getting a bit stir-crazy. No school in Pinellas today so now we’re juggling kids and the niece. I decided not to have my crews work today since it was a light day anyway and some people will cancel.

I’m at work.

We lost power at 4pm Sunday and still don’t have it back.

:Lays on the floor, begins kicking her heels and screaming:

No power, no phone, more damage to my screen.

I still feel pretty lucky.

Just starting to get “You might be a Floridian…” glurge from my Dad. Includes such gems as:

Yeah, I thought I said “within a season”, guess I forgot. It was 1896 by the way. My point being that 17 million Floridians don’t want to hear about poor Texas having had the same problem first when there were only 100k people living there. It’s really not the same thing. Besides their storms didn’t happen all in a 6 week period.

Florida just dangles here off the country right in the middle of two bodies of water known for hurricane activity, while Texas is safely tucked up there in the Gulf. They’re not so tough, let’s see them try dangling in harm’s way.

is still just a little punchy from all the hurricanes

Lays down next to ivylass There, there, honey. It’ll be alright. {{{ivylass}}} I’d join you in the kicking and screaming but I’m too freakin’ tired. Think I’ll just take a nap. ZZZzzzzzzz

Didn’t lose power this time (yay!), but have those darn wet carpets again. Am playing phone tag with insurance company right now.

They never came out to assess the damage from Frances, how are they going to know what damage was from that, and what is from Jeanne? Furthermore, I don’t think I should have to pay 2 deductibles since they didn’t come out the first time.

This has not been a good weekend. Can I throw my temper tantrum now?

Just got an email with a link to a cool tribute site .

The background music has got a religious bend to it, but the pictures are cool.
