The Panthers-Rams football game today was a wild one, especially toward the end and in OT. I was on the edge of my seat through a great deal of it. So when we finally get to the end of the first OT period, I needed a break. There haven’t been commercials in ages, so I figure I’ve got some time. I do a couple quick things in the kitchen, I hit the bathroom, and get back to the game.
It’s over. They’re on the field, celebrating.
OK, my bad timing on that. Sometimes life sucks.
But they’ll at least show a replay, right?
Hah. They show shots of the celebation. The Goose yammers a bit. They interview players. They show a shot of the owner from before the game. They cut to commercials, O Lord do they show commercials. If they’d shown that many during the break between OT periods, I’d have seen the winning play in real time. Then they interview another player. Then it’s more shots of the field, then back to Fox Central, but not until after more commercials. They do show a brief glimpse of the winning TD, but not from an angle where you can see the play in any meaningful sense.
RTFirefly, it was a Delhomme pass over the middle to Stephen Smith, on 3rd & 14, for a 65 (or so) yard TD pass. Just a simple slant, and the Rams (as they had done all fucking game), missed tackles, and Smith ran it all the way in.
In an aside, I contend that Mike Martz is the worst coach in the history of all sports since the dawn of time. Please, for the love of all that’s Good in This World, Georgia Frontiere, fire his stupid ass. I’m fucking begging you. His pure idiocy lost the Super Bowl a few years ago, and he is simply incompetent.
How can a team be so fucking talented, and yet so utterly clueless?
Thanks for the summary of the play, GoHeels. I had been able to gather from Goose that the winning play was the first play of the second OT period, so I knew what the game situation was, since I’d been watching right up to the end of the first OT period. And I knew that the pass was to Stephen Smith, since they said that too.
But after watching most of the game, including all but that one play of OT, I would have liked to see the play itself, durnitall. Can’t believe they didn’t do a ‘just in case you were still in the bathroom during the break, here it is again’ replay before the commercials, or before ending the broadcast from St. Louis.
Well, I don’t want to hijack the dumbness that is FOX (though they forever lost my faith when they cancelled Firefly), I do want to join in the pile-on of Mike Martz. JUST GIVE THE BALL TO MARSHALL FUCKING FAULK, ALREADY! Jebus, man, you have what might still be the greatest player in the game in the backfield, but, nooo, you have to be Genius Coach of the Year and show everyone your flashy offense. Guess what? That’s what loses you football games. Bulger can’t be intercepted if he’s just fucking handing the ball to Faulk! I mean, sure, you don’t want to become one-dimensional, I get that, but you could emphasize the run to set up the pass instead of calling deep passes like a freaking spaz. That’s the beauty of the Rams. You have Marshall Faulk in the backfield, Torry Holt on one side and Isaac Bruce on the other. You have talent. This isn’t the Patriots, where Bellichick has to keep coming up with outlandish and unexpected gameplans in order to win. PLAY FUCKING FOOTBALL! Run the ball down their throats, and then, when they pile nine guys into the box to stop you, punish them by tossing it over their heads. Stop pretending that we should all bow down to your obvious genius, because, while you might be smart, I’m here to tell you that with a team built like yours is, there is no excuse for not being in the Super Bowl every year. I hope you get fired and banished to somewhere in BFE, just like Bill Callahan.
Sorry for the rant, didn’t know it was going to go on that long. It’s just that it was Mike Martz’s superior attitude, coupled with Kurt Warner’s similar attitude and smirking face, that made me start to really despise the way the Rams’ organization is run.
If you have ESPN you can always catch the replay on Sportscenter, RTF. It was really a pretty simple play, just a slant over the top and Smith was wide open. Most of the paly was just Smith running alone down the field. It was a hell of an ending.
I agree with Wizard about Martz’s incompetence. He should have taken a couple of shots at the endzone before the end of regulation but he uncharacteristiaclly got conservative and played for the overtime. That was dumb enough, but when the Rams were in Wilkin’s range at the very end there was no reason at all to run a pass play. That’s when you jam Faulk up the middle for as much as you can get then kick it. What you don’t do is put the ball in the air where it can be picked. Martz did the one think that had the potential lose the game for him. What an ass.
What great poise and character the Panthers showed, though, especially in such a tough house to play in.
I’m too lazy to retype, so I’ll share what I said in the thread on the Panthers.
Alright, so I was just rooting for the Panthers because I’m sick of hearing about Mike Martz being a genius. And cause John Fox looks like such a guy’s guy, whereas Martz looks like a dork.
Maybe now the sports media will finally realize, “Hey, maybe it was Dick Vermeil that was really behind the success of the Rams, and not Mike Martz.” The only coach that rankles me even more than Martz is Brian Billick.
Here’s to the Eagles and Chiefs in the Vermeil Bowl! Oh, how the tears would flow after that one.
It kills me that Mike Martz, who’s always gamblng, got conservative in the 4th quarter when the Carolina D has been on the field for most of the last 40 minutes, were exhausted, and not stopping anything.
I love Martz. He takes the Rams right out of the playoffs. We’re better off without 'em.
Here’s to the Panthers and Colts “We’re the NFL’s worst nightmare for ratings” Superbowl.
Well, these guys, right? playing football? Did some stuff. With the ball. Trying to make points. See? And, like, the other guys, no not those guys, those are the other other guys, they were like, not very good at stopping the guys (the first guys, that is) from doing the stuff they were doing.
And Martz coached the Rams out of a victory. Nah, I think I’ll let the clock run down here in the 4th - just give me that overtime chance!
Then…whoah, my kicker nailed that one…oops, delay of game. Well, I don’t think he’s good for the extra five yards. Let’s run a couple of running plays, let him think about, and then let him try again from the same place. Brilliant!!
