Hey guys: why haven't you had a vasectomy?

That was exactly my thought.

One night shortly after my older daughter had started kindergarten and the younger one had just been completely weaned, I had a Diaphragm Mishap (I’d been using a barrier method because I’d been nursing). I remember how panicky I felt, but I also knew about emergency contraception (this was before anyone called it Plan anything), so after I dropped my kindergartener off, I called my doctor’s office. His (devoutly Catholic) nurse told me she’d never heard of emergency contraception and that there was nothing they could do for me except give me a pregnancy test in 6 to 8 weeks. I called my OB’s office, but he was out of town, I couldn’t reach his nurse, and the other doctor’s nurse was less than helpful. I then went to the phone book, looked up Planned Parenthood, called them, and got in and out of their office (with the toddler in tow) in just about an hour (when I got home, I found a message from my doctor saying that of course he could prescribe it to me - I just needed to call his nurse with the pharmacy information). No matter what you think about abortion, Planned Parenthood can be a lifesaver.

Mr. Legend quit procrastinating and got himself snipped shortly after this incident. He’d been planning to get it done, but we gave it a little time to be really, truly sure we didn’t want any more children. This episode convinced us that we were done.
