I’m a 39 year old with two kids. I’ve been divorced for two years now, and had I stayed married I would have probably gotten a vasectomy by now. Yesterday I went to the doctor to talk about having one done.
He didn’t seem to interested in having me get it done. When he found out I was divorced he kept asking me what if I found a ‘mate’ who wanted kids. When he did the exam and squeezed I kind of moved. When I did he said, we’ll have to put you under to do the operation. What guy likes to be squeezed by the doctor.
In all the things I’ve read it’s not supposed to hurt much, and I don’t think I’ve read anyone who needed to be put under for it. He also said a few things that didn’t mesh with what I’ve already read. He only does them on Tuesdays and said I’d be at work the next day, but I couldn’t do anything for a week.
So guys, what was your experience, and has anyone needed to be put under to have it done? Honestly it felt like he didn’t want me to have it done, and I’m not, with him.
Your doc seems to have an odd way of doing things based on my experience and that of others I know.
I had one in January. The procedure itself was no big deal at all. The recovery was a little more difficult but not too bad. I only took Tylenol for pain. I had mine on a Friday and was back at work on Monday. Taking a yoga class a week later was ill advised and things were definitely tender for about two weeks but overall not that bad.
My vasectomy was totally a breeze. They shaved my scrotum, slathered me with iodine, and except for the ‘pinch’ of the anaesthetic needle, all I felt during the procedure was a weird tugging.
Two very tiny slits, two tugs at the vas, a couple snips, and voila! No more baby-makin’ for moi.
I spent the rest of the day (it was a 9AM appointment) laying on the front lawn on an inflatable mattress drinking beer, and went back to work at my physically-demanding job after 2 days. No problemo.
I also know a guy who was off for a week with swelling, major bruising, and infection, so YMMV.
Just a local for me too. Easy-peasy snip snip and out of the doctors in an hour. Ice and sore for a day, sex in 2 days. And if your Dr. is dissuading you because of your marital status, go to another guy. IMHO.
I was blessed with a daughter and a son and my wife and I were more than content with that (if I could afford it I’d be like Romney and have a whole bunch of kids).
Anyways I was in the service at the time and went to the base hospital to see the Dr, we had a talk and he had a look and told me to come back the following week for the operation.
I showed up as scheduled and was prepped, I was in a room with screens around the bed and in comes the Dr. He parks himself on a stool and gets ready to go when I notice four or five nurses looking over the screens (mine’s a grower not a show-er).
The Dr said they were trainee nurses and to ignore them…riiiight. I’m all embarrassed which doesn’t help ol’ “Reg” (any other guys have names for the python?)
The only discomfort I felt was when the Dr started his work and as he went along I felt a bit of a tug…up inside me…like he had pulled a string that was attached to something inside me near the groin. It didn’t hurt, it just felt creepy.
I walked tenderly for a day or two (in my mind I was sure the stitches wouldn’t hold and my nuts’d be rolling on the floor) anyways the worse thing about the procedure was the itch of the hair growing back.
I’m wondering if this guy was doing it an older way, he said I would feel tugging for about 5 minutes on both sides. That doesn’t seem to be what others have said. I’ve only known one guy who had any problems after, and that was because he was working around the house the next day.
I don’t know if I had mine done an old way or not - it was about eighteen years ago, and there was a lot of tugging on both sides. He was apparently trying to get the vas deferens out to where he could cauterize the ends. (Trust me, you haven’t lived until you have looked down to see smoke issuing from your crotch from behind the surgical drape.)
I had mine done on Friday, and was back at work Monday, but I work sitting down.
Overall, it was a bit worse than I expected, but tolerable, and well worth the results - no more bothering with diaphragms and such.
I don’t have the anatomy to give you a personal reply…though I did know a man several years ago who had it done. He said it wasn’t terribly difficult, but if he could not do it again, he definitely wouldn’t.
He said, with all the free birth control going around for women of all ages, why should he get the snip?
It just occurred to me that I never went to get my sperm count checked.
As I recall, there were a certain number of “loads” I was advised might still be active after the snip. Oh well, it’s been over 15 years, and countless shipments, and nothing’s come home to roost, so I guess I’m good.
Had mine a few years back - had to go under - no way I was sitting there watching the needles to numb it.
The thing was when I went to inquire when I was married I had to get my wife’s permission (in the UK).
I was told it was her right to have kids if she wanted but if she wanted the op she did not need to ask my permission - good for the goose was not good for the gander.
I’m sure its different now but you are talking 17 years ago.
Also, I was back to work after a day or 2 with a little tenderness.
I had mine done a little under two years ago. I was put under for it; the doctor said something about me having a “tight scrotum” or something. Why that would make a difference, I didn’t ask and I may have the details wrong but either way, I went under general anesthesia for it.
Reading up a little before hitting “Submit” it seems that, if the scrotum is a little tighter than average, the doctor may want to use a general because it causes everything to relax and be fully loose. I guess things can move and contract when done with a local and this way the doctor doesn’t lose what little room he has to work with.
Recovery was a little longer than I’ve heard for some people. Nothing terrible, just some aches and wincing when getting off the couch. Within a month I was completely fine and even that month was no great trial.
Mine was very easy. Took about fifteen minutes, fully recovered within three days. I did have a bit of swelling, but nothing too bad.
I was pretty annoyed, though, that the doctor made sure to tell my wife “You understand that this procedure will make it impossible for him to impregnate you?” First off, the procedure was her idea. Secondly, my wife wasn’t the one getting snipped, so why consult with her?
This is very close to my experience. The procedure is really not that big a deal these days; I’ve never heard of anyone going under general anesthesia for it.
Your doctor sounds like a bit of a quack, frankly. Ask to be referred to a urologist.
I had mine last year. It was a new no scalpel, no needle procedure that took approx. 5 minutes and all I felt was a small pinch.
I was back on my feet the next day but had a dull throbbing pain for a week or two.
He is a urologist! I should have known when he walked in the room and asked my why I was there.
And yes I will be finding a new doctor. And if I can find a doctor to do the same procedure that Sparky812 had then that might be the easiest. Why do I have to make my phone calls at work.
There are some conditions, DVT being one, where the women can no longer use birth control. At least in pill form. Sometimes it’s time to man up and do your part of the job.
