Hey Hey We're The Monkees...

Sorry the thread title isn’t so original. This a thread for Monkees lovers. Monkee lovers. Whatever! Its just a spin off from that Beatle/Monkees thing. (No, you are not allowed to come in here and say things like “The Monkees didn’t play their own instruments!”)

Anyway.

::stands:: I am Zoggie. I have loved the Monkees…oh, since this summer or so. Yeah I’m a newborn fan, practically. I think Davy is the hottest one…I love that accent!

I’ve heard of their movie Head, and it sounds really trippy and fun. I may actually view it.

Come, fellow fans. Rejoice. There is a haven for those who love the Monkees. Right here.

jumps up and down I’m next, I’m next!

I’ve been a Monkees fan since about '86. Pete is the one I die for. He’s the only one NOT playing “himself” in the show. The others were pretty true to themselves. He’s a great artist, fine as all get out…

stops to wipe up the drool

Seen Head… awesome movie. Highly recommend it to all.

Now it’s my turn to sit back down.

TruePisces

I love the Monkees. I have no favorite. I have been listening to them since I was little and my parents would play the Oldies stations in the car on the way to school.

Hmm…I wonder what would happen if I mentioned that they didn’t play their own instruments. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hypergirl, don’t you even dare!

By the way: Isn’t the music video for Daydream Believer great? Every time I see it I nearly die…

Hello, my name is Persephone, and I’m a Monkee Lover.
My favorite is Mike. He’s earthy and hip, yet he’s his own man. His songs are the best.

Peter and Micky are tied for second, and Davy is a sort-of distant third. I mean, I like him, but he’s just a little too “token” for me.

As for Head, I’ve seen it too. It’s rather, um, odd. But what else could you expect from the Monkees, Jack Nicholson, and the late '60s?

Kewl.

I’m a Monkees fan and have been since '76 or so. Best Monkee of 'em all was Nesmith. Listen to the song “Listen to the Band” and try to deny it. You can’t! It rocks!

Head is…so-so, IMHO. It’s worth seeing, the music’s great, and it’s 500 gags in search of a plot.

Keep your eyes open for a far rarer item: It was a made-for-tv movie called “33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee”

Favorite album is either “Instant Replay” or “The Birds, the Bees and the Monkees”.

Fenris (who’s not ANYONE’S steppin’ stone :D)

Yeah, I like The Monkees - their music is ok, but I always liked watching the show. Did you know that they didn’t…uh, nevermind. But we all know that Mike’s mom invented Liquid Paper, right? (or was it White-Out? whatever)

I saw “Head” once, a long time ago. It didn’t make much of an impression on me. Maybe I’ll try it again if it’s on again.

Oh yeah! The Monkees did so play their own instruments!
Well, they did in concert, anyway. And so what if they faked it on TV? They were actors, hired to star in a TV show about a band. The fact that three of them actually sang well was just icing on the cake.

Yeah. About the Liquid Paper thing- that was a question on millionaire. What did Nesmith’s mom invent- I got it right! Yeah Zoggie!!

Davy token? Well…I’m a bit biased. I just melt when I see him. On TV at least. (Sorry its an infatuation. And he is SO much hotter than that snotty Keith Partridge/David Cassidy.)

You guys know that Mickey Dolenz co-wrote for (and guest starred twice) on Boy Meets World? And Davy got to guest star on it once. (I LOVE that show, the way I love the Monkees. Used to watch it all the time.)

Yeah, I mentined 33 1/3 in that other thread. Did you know they aired that opposite the Oscars the year it was released? I can’t believe they aired it, period. It was great. And the version of “Listen to the Band” on thre will blow your mind. Mike’s sing-along with himself is pretty surreal, too.
For the record, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were both accomplished musicians before they joined the Monkees. And I don’t care what anyone says, Mickey Dolenz was some singer.
My favorite album would have to be Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones. And for the real collectors, Rhino Records has a small subsidiary called Rhino Handmade that just released (via the net) a 3-CD set of the Headquarters sessions.
Favorite songs: “Goin’ Down”, “Randy Scouse Git”, “Listen to the Band”, “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, “Sometime in the Morning”, “What Am I Doing Hangin’'Round?”, “Words”.
Yes, I’m a geek.

Trivia: Stephen Stills auditioned for the Monkees but was turned down (due to bad teeth, I heard).

I saw Davy, Peter and Mickey in concert. The warm up groups were Peter Noone and BJ Thomas.

Wait…I think I’m having a flashback!

I love the Monkees!!! I have been a fan since '96. I LOVE MICKY (no “e”)!!! He’s the cutest! At least once he got the fro. I met him once and he signed my copy of his autobio. and all I did was cry, it was wonderful! But yeah…anyways, Head is so awesome I’ve seen it a million times and 33 1/3 is great. I cant say enough how much I LOVE THE MONKEES!!! Just seeing this post made my day/night!!(it’s 2:30 am, take your pick. This also my excuse for the randomness of this post)

A few notes: They played their own instruments on Headquarters, Micky played the guitar in a few groups before he was in the monkees, Jimi Hendrix opened for them, and…THEY ARE PLANNING ANOTHER TOUR!!!

Fave songs: Daily Nightly (my email address!), St Matthews (from Missing links 2), She, and Goin’ Down

And, don’t forget the cameo appearance by Frank Zappa, of all people.

I always thought it interesting that they had two musicians, two actors… Though, both the actors (Mickey & Davy) had dabbled in the music biz. Davy actually had a record contract with Gem, and had an album (which they show as sight gags in a couple eps) before the Monkees, and Mickey had played in a band (whose name is escaping me at the moment… hey, I just woke up, what do you expect!!!) He just wasn’t the drummer, so he had to learn that for the show.

And it wasn’t a matter of the Monkees didn’t WANT to play their own instruments on the first couple records or the show… TPTB wouldn’t let 'em. Which is where Mike’s infamous hand through the wall of the hotel came in.

Never managed to see 33 1/3… original airing was before my time, and I’ve not managed to see it out anywhere since. Though I’ve looked, hard. But Head really WAS far out there. The first time I watched it, about 7, 8 years ago, I didn’t care for it, as much of a Monkees fan as I was. But I watched it again on AMC over the summer and realized that if I wasn’t looking for a real plot, I found lots of interesting stuff in there!

And, jumping in with the rest, favorite song… Shades of Gray. Pete might not have the best voice of the guys (though definitely, by far, the best musical talent) but I melt when I hear him & Mickey sing that one.

There was a really cool album from about 1976 called “Dolenz, Jones, Boyce and Hart” that sounds more like the Monkees that the final original Monkees album (“Changes”). It’s never been released on CD (the concert CD by DJB&H isn’t the same album and isn’t nearly as good), and is rarer than hell (at least around here). If A)you still have a turntable and B)can manage to find a copy, it’s well worth your while. The “gimmick” of the album is: What will radio sound like 100 years in the future?

The composition of the album “feels” like a sequel to “Head”. You can find more info about it at this great Monkees site

Fenris

Yeah! I love the Monkees! I used to watch them on TV everyday after school. I had a crush on each of them in turn but looking back I think Mike was my overall favorite. I checked out their website (www.monkees.net) and I think they look better today. I’m a sucker for older men!

Good news, TruePisces, it’s apparently been re-released by Rhino. You can get it at Amazon.com.

I’m gonna order one for myself today, since my 35[sup]th[/sup] generation, 20 year old bootleg is mostly unwatchable.

Instruments? Feh! You know, that isn’t even Michael Nesmith’s real hat.

How’s that for an obscure Simpson’s reference?

I’ve come toa grudging truce with the Monkees. They may have been fake but who am I to talk since I was a hard cor KISS fan in high school. My brother rented Detroit Rock City last week. After watching I was this close to going right out to buy a copy of Destroyer.

Just checking in. As previously mentioned, I am a Monkees’ fan. Peter (1), (2), and (3) is my favorite Monkee, musician and all around great guy. Without (I hope) sounding immodest, I can answer most questions you might have about the Monkees and separate fact from myth in a lot of cases. I can talk on them for hours (as you’ll find if you indulge me)…

33-1/3 has been available from Rhino since about 1996 and can often be found in stores (depending on where you live) like Suncoast video/Sam Goody, Record Town, Tower Records, etc.

Head was a strange experiment and is an interesting watch. The first time I saw it, I was 16 and it unnerved me a bit. With maturity and subsequent viewings I’ve learned to appreciate some of what’s behind it. I had the privilege of seeing it on the big screen at a film festival in Cleveland and really enjoyed seeing it in that format. I recommend it with the caveat that it ain’t nothing like an episode.

The Monkees television series is also available on video either in individual episodes (less than half sold individually) or as a boxset from Rhino that can be ordered several places on line–usually its tagged around $299-399, on rare occasion (usually when I’m broke) I’ve seen it a smidge less.

Stephen Stills was a friend of Peter’s from Greenwich Village. Peter was playing folk music there and washing dishes. He considered moving to the west coast for work and Stills told him about the casting of the show. [The producers told Stills, they liked him but his teeth were too bad for the show’s image and asked if he knew anyone who looked like him.] Mike was the only one to audition for the show based on the ad placed in Variety; everyone else was put onto it by someone they knew (Davy was already under contract).

The Monkees (or Threekees as many fans call them absent Mike, who just simply doesn’t like touring) are planning a tour for early spring 2001–35 year anniversary of the show, and Peter had to postpone a tour with his own band, Shoe Suede Blues as a result.

In the meantime, Peter will be doing some shoes with long time friend (since his village days) and musicial collaborator James Lee Stanley.

FUN FACTOIDS

Micky loves the ladies (I’ve seen him in flirtatious action), directs/produces, paints exceptional images of microscopic and cosmic elements – from his love and voracious study of science. Micky’s daughters, except Amy who looks like Samantha (his first wife), favor their father.

Davy still has a passion for horses and lives in PA. He’s been married 4 times and two of those were to the same woman. His daughters are gorgeous and one has done a little acting. He’s a pretty nice and surprisingly funny guy and is “on” for fans the most.

Peter also did a couple episodes of Boy Meets World and may have actually been the first, if I recall. He played Cory’s girlfriend, Topanga’s dad, a folky vegetarian guitar craftsman. After the Monkees Peter went through a rough time because he gave away a lot of what he earned and ended up broke. He taught music in some private schools and was once (early 70’s) busted and did some time in a small town for possession of about $3 worth of hashish.

Peter has suffered divorces as well and has two children, a boy and girl–both of whom have played out with him on occasion. He’s talked of setting a “family” concert with he, his son and his brother, Nick. Nick has written a few songs and is also a sweetheart (there’s a family resemblance but Peter is cuter IMHO).

Mike doesn’t like touring. He once attended a Threekees show in disguise taking Winnona Ryder, who was a fan, and expressed that he never got to experience what the fans did that made them go so crazy. Mike was always about music and was the first to become discontent not playing.

On a personal note…I’ve been a fan since 1986 and can’t count the number of concerts I’ve had the privilege of attending. I love the Monkees shows, but truly appreciate getting to see Peter genuinely enjoy himself playing his solo stuff. You can find several of my favorite Peter related experiences linked from the “Other Pages” section of my personal website.

YAY!! I love the Monkees too. Mike Nesmith’s songs are my favorite. He’s the dreamiest. Back in the mid-80’s, Mtv or someone did a 24-hour marathon and a friend and I watched the whole thing. We didn’t speak for a couple of days after that, but we were awfully proud of ourselves.

One of my favorite things on the show was a performance by Tim Buckley singing “Song to the Siren.” It was just beautiful.

Also, I have been plagued by this for years and maybe I can now find some solace. Remember that episode where the Monkees got their own kids’ TV show? And it was spearheaded by this little kid who was a real fast-talker? Will someone PLEASE ease my troubled soul and tell that they agree that it either IS Bob Costas or looks and sounds just like he would have as a kid. It’s really making me crazy.
