Hey June, don't make it bad (but you will) [Mini-Rant]

“Help is on the way.”

You can set up a search for what you want and save it. Then you get alerts if something fitting the search parameters shows up for sale. No further effort required!

Adding to The Birds theme: Blue Jays! Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of them?
I have bird feeders and free ranging chickens. And Blue Jays. Many many Blue Jays. Literally hundreds of the little fuckers. They cover the bird feeders - which I’ve stopped filling since the finches and warblers and sparrows and all can’t access them anyway due to Blue Jays. And they eat all the chicken feed, even stuff sequestered in the chicken coop.
Two weeks ago there really were hundreds. They came flying out of the woods in groups of 25-50 and surrounded the house. It was surreal. A friend with a two story window wall on their house said they were bouncing off the windows by the dozens.
Now they just lurk in the woods and wait until I relent and give the chickens a treat. Upon which they swoop in, 25-30 at a time, and hoover up the remains.
I’m afraid to plant seeds in my garden. I know they’ll dig them and any surviving seedling up since they’ve done it in previous years. But this year the numbers are ridiculous.

Label your bird feeder “American League Championship Series”. The Blue Jays won’t go near it.

Hey, thanks! I did not know that.

My SIL’s soon to be ex husband of 30 years, decided in his idiotic head, to move his mistress into their family home! WTF! She lives in Wyoming isolated from her family and friends. Sad and fucked up!

I converted some old buckets to waste-free chicken feeders using this kit.

Works great!!!

I don’t have chickens, so I don’t know how to fix that part (maybe find something the chickens like but the blue jays don’t? I don’t know if that’s even possible but worth a thought). But if you still want to feed the smaller birds, get a feeder that’s designed for the little ones, preferably one with counterweights on it so the ports will close if a larger, heavier bird attempts to feed from it. I also have a thistle feeder, which the finches love and which the blue jays can’t feed from. These are the feeders I have:

I occasionally see a blue jay or two around, but they only come to the bird bath since they can’t eat out of the feeders.

The Taiwanese government got complacent and let in the Pandemic. Assholes. They had been doing so well and it was getting so close to the finish line. Because this isn’t a first world country, we have to beg and plead for vaccines, and so they decided to make them themselves. OK, but they won’t be available for several more months and we are in quasi lockdown with the schools closed, too much of my income gone and my kids home, bored and fighting all day.

Heh. That made me giggle. Probably as useful advice as any.

That looks interesting. Unfortunately anything big enough for a chicken is also big enough for a Blue Jay. But I’ll see if I can find something like that. The one you linked is out-of-stock.

Chickens and Blue Jays eat everything. They’ll eat you if you let them.
But those drop down feeders look interesting. Not cheap though, are they?
I have “squirrel proof” feeders that the little red squirrels love. They sit inside the wire part and stuff their little faces. The Blue Jays hang off the bottom and shake the seed out. They do the same with the other feeders they can’t quite access directly.
I’m really hoping they’re just part of the spring migration and the majority will move along eventually. They’re a scourge to the whole area at the moment. Fingers crossed.

I’ve had both of those feeders for at least 5 years, and they do work. So worth it to me. I’m sure I’ve saved more than their purchase price not feeding the gray squirrels, blue jays and grackles.

The curve in the access tube is too long for a bluejay neck, but a chicken quickly learns to put their head in and reach down for food.

A week ago, I could have written your post. But last week, everything changed. Why? Who knows! I didn’t do anything. Maybe a background update?

It’s not that they’re reading the CDs—I no longer own a CD player. It’s that, when they check the metadata for the electronic music files, there is an absense of data that would say “this song was purchased from Apple in this country for use on this iPhone.” I can’t speak to exactly what the issue is. All I know is, I can’t play a third of my music on my phone, though I used to be able to, and it’s still no problem from the laptop, and I find it irritating.

I think this is my first mini-rant ever. Here goes.

Why, oh why, do very few sellers on Facebook Marketplace give the dimensions of furniture they’re trying to sell?? I’m in the market for a bookcase and one or two nightstands. I can’t exceed certain maximum sizes, and this seems like the most basic information that should be provided. Sure, point out defects, scratches, etc. but also provide the damn dimensions. I’ve responded to a couple of sellers in the past month or two asking if an item is still available and, if so, please provide the dimensions – and none of them have replied. I 've bought some things on FB Marketplace because the sellers provided that information but I guess the rest of them don’t really want my money.

Trivial and genuinely irksome! Well done!

I’m fair-skinned and 64 years old. I go to a dermatologist yearly for skin checks, and I’ve gone to a dermatology chain for a few years now. They have good doctors, but every time I go I see a different person. When I find one that I really like, I write down his/her name so that I can see them again next year.

Every time, I find that that doctor has moved on. It happened again: I tried to find the good doctor I liked last year, and she’s no longer listed. I did a search for her name, thinking she might have moved to another practice or opened her own, and I did find her. She has moved to Idaho and is now manufacturing medical face masks instead of practicing medicine!

So I have to start all over again and see a new doctor at the dermatology chain. Bleh. I’ve seen some docs there I don’t care for and I anticipate that that’s what will happen again this time.

teelabrown, I’m having the same experience with the urologists at my local mega-hospital. I finally found one I like, and he’s gone to god-knows-where.

Even minor for a rant, but I hate that Facebook will show you an old pic as a memory, let you click to share it, and give you a place to comment, but then posts your comment without the picture.

It showed me a nice pic of me and my mom on her birthday (which is today) a few years ago, but it then left out the image in the actual shared post. So stupid.

(I was able to go fix it by manually going to the Memories tab, so at least that’s something if anyone else encounters this problem.)
