I wonder how many of the people squawking about actors using acceptance speeches as political forums actually even watch the programs about which they’re bitching.
But people are holding the wrong opinions. If their opinion isn’t exactly like mine they are wrong, evil and Nazis.
Maybe you’re right, and Gandhi was full of shit:
Everyone else is looting? Shit, why should you be honest? Go ahead, everyone else is doing it. Tired of Trump supporters acting like dicks to everyone else? Maybe things will get better for everyone if you lower the bar for good behavior on your side too. That will surely lead to a higher level of discourse in the future.
I imagine you’re the kind of guy who ends up on the evening news because your neighbor was a petty asshole and you decided to reciprocate/escalate instead of taking the high road. Because hey, why should you be burdened with remaining civil and reasonable when your neighbor is flinging dog turds over the fence?
All of which was kind of beside the point, because in the particular post you quoted I wasn’t arguing in favor of any particular standard of behavior; I was merely pointing out that no one in this discussion had challenged Streep’s right to speak her mind.
I suspect the real fault line is whether you agree with Streep on substance or not.
Question for those who don’t just disagree with Streep, but question the appropriateness of her saying it: what if a celeb used their platform to criticize Obama, or talk about radical Islamic terrorism, or the scourge of opioid abuse or manufacturing jobs going away? Is that out of bounds too?
I thought you were being serious at first. It’s hard to tell these days. ![]()
Rendition: a performance or interpretation, especially of a dramatic role or piece of music.
You seem to think “rendition” means “Imitation”. It does not.
IMHO it’s not about the general appropriateness of her saying it - it’s about the appropriateness of her saying it in that venue. I do agree entirely with what she said; I just wish she’d have expressed it in a blog, on a talk show, or at a press conference, instead of on an occasion where she was supposed to be offering thanks for the award and perspective on the achievement for which she was being recognized.
Stop. It’s a saying. Do you need a safe space for awhile?
Seems to me the people who put on the Golden Globe Awards ceremony should be the arbiters of what’s appropriate for that particular venue. Not the people who weren’t even in physical attendance, let alone receiving an award.
I think this is really what it’s about. Had the OP posted this is CS or IMHO and simply said “I don’t think it’s appropriate for award recipients to use their acceptance speech time to express their political view” I would have been totally on board. But the fact that he had to throw in an insult about how being an actor somehow invalidates MS’s opinion tells me what the real agenda is. Had her message been pro Trump, pro Right, pro 2nd Amendment, whatever, I suspect he’d be fine with it. It’s pretty transparent so why not be honest from the start?
There’s a youtube video alleging you are a moron. The video fails to show that you are a moron.
Apparently, however, there is a question if you are a moron or not.
No, though they’d be factually wrong if they were accusing Obama of causing radical Islamic terrorism, the scourge of opioid abuse or manufacturing jobs going away.
Do you *honestly *believe this? That’s not snark or baiting, I’m really interested to know how you have come to that conclusion. And if that’s how you feel, are you perfectly fine with the leader of our nation expressing himself that way, apparently on a regular basis?
That question goes out to any of our Trump supporters here. If we’re going to talk about it, let’s talk.
I believe that’s called “Bricker’s Law”.
Didn’t Street’s speech connect Trump’s anti-immigration stance to how such a thing would affect Hollywood and her profession? She was correct in what she said, how she said it, and where she said it. And the OP is a tool.
:dubious: Surely you remember the conservatives here lining up to rebuke all the nasty things conservative rocker Ted Nugent said about Obama?
Yeah, me neither.
You think Ms Streep’s statement was “shit flinging”? Says a lot about your language skills…
Different circumstances - if Ted Nugent ever gets near an award ceremony, he’s probably waiting tables.
I believe this law is framed as: “If it’s legal, or if it has a low probability of successful prosecution, then it is perfectly acceptable behavior.”
The corollary is “Anyone who expresses a contrary opinion and declares the behaviour unacceptable despite the lack of explicit illegality clearly wishes to be a dictator.”
