Hey meryl streep, you are a play-actor, nothing more

Well he’s not complaining about what an actor said on TV.

Good thing nobody’s forcing you to listen to either, then. And while you don’t listen, they both will use any platform they feel like using to talk about anything they want, I guess.

Eh. If 2016 has shown us something, is that common sense concepts have stopped meaning anything, so anything goes.

Starving Artist, I think you took her words much more literally than I did. Mr. Trump has famously railed against Hollywood, the media and (some) foreigners. I think she was using a bit of hyperbole to make her point. Or maybe not; I’m not inside her head. But like her or not, she’s not a *stupid *woman; I don’t think she’s hysterically pulling shit out of thin air. And even though I’m *not *inside her head, I guarantee she doesn’t hold the opinion that the worst part about all the foreigners in the country being forced out would be the lack of their contribution to the arts. But you already know that, don’t you

As to the brouha-ha over Steve Martin’s tweet, I wholeheartedly agree that the reaction to that was a bunch of horseshit. I guess I wasn’t thinking of it as a left-wing thing because I think everyone here agreed it was a nonissue. But I’ll take your word for it. Doesn’t mean MS ever held that belief (unless you saw / heard her comment about it?).

That might be true if there was any common sense displayed last year. Maybe next time someone will try that approach.

When you’re making hay out of an actors speech, you have to whip up stuff. I get that. But that means you are going to have to acccept that you will end up as the trainwreck. Those are the requirements of argument.

Just cite who I’m paraphrasing, cause I thought I wrote that post. Enlighten me.

I bet this’ll be creative.

Trump must be like a voodoo doll - poke him and his fans squeal in pain.

Why not? You hear about it from lawyers and cops and database analysts and waitresses and warehouse workers and doctors and pilots and Uber drivers and aspiring day traders and nannies and personal trainers and sewage treatment plant managers and whatever the hell else anybody who regularly speaks their mind does for a living. Why are actors required to keep their yaps shut?

Well for one thing, she doesn’t have the prestige of being a misogynistic scam artist/former game show host.

So what is the proper venue and job title a Progressive must have in order to pontificate on politics?

No shit. Once we start putting reality show hosts in the White House, I think it’s a little late to start complaining about what actors have to say about it.

Just another asshole to add to the “Ignore” list.

Nice strawmen. Exactly nobody in this thread has challenged her freedom under the law or under the rules of the Golden Globes award ceremony to say whatever she wants; not one person so far has suggested that she be imprisoned, fined, or banned from future award ceremonies.

Maybe it’s time to name another internet rule like Godwin’s law or Rule 34: it seems like any time a question of taste/etiquette/decorum comes up, eventually someone feels inexplicably compelled to point out that “X has a right to [do whatever they did]!”, even if nobody has suggested otherwise.

“taste/etiquette/decorum”? Are these things that only one side needs to respect? Where was the hang wringing from the right over taste, etiquette and decorum during the campaign? Hell over the last 8 years even? Is it just a do as I say but not as I do kind of thing then?

Honestly, I would feel much better about the future of our country if Streep was our president elect. Not kidding or exaggerating.

I don’t want to hear it from them either.

No, everyone should respect them. And I’ll bet your mother taught you “but all the kids are doing it” is never an adequate justification for acting like a jerk. However, if you want to be just like the jackasses on “the right”, that’s certainly your privilege.

Poor baby, surrounded by people who are - gasp! - talking!

Maybe you should build an echo chamber in your home so at least some of the time, you’re assured of only listening to yourself.

I think Meryl Streep is the most overrated actress of her generation, and I usually don’t like it when actors use the awards speech to further their political views (Leo, I’m looking at YOU) even if I share them.

BUT…in this case I loved it, I loved what she said, and I think it was most appropriate that she said it. Yay for Meryl!

So you’re just not pleased with the the fact that people hold opinions. Okay. Now we’re on the same page. Next question: based upon that, why should anybody give a shit about *your *opinion?

Okay everyone-- keep your heads down, your fucking mouths shut and just hope for the best.
