I’ve just noticed my sig is automatically updated an ddoen’t stay static. Has this been happening during my entire post life here (and I’ve not noticed) or just a recent occurence?
Very dangerous though. I think back to the reasons why we can’t edit (which I fully agree with) and see the potential for exploitation…
This has been happening since the move to vBulletin. It is not something that the board can do much about. But if you would like you could go talk to the vBulletin people.
The board did that before the upgrade, I believe.
I ran some tests when I first arrived.
Some people said they had a trick to get around the change.
Satan, I believe, said he would make a simulated signature, just typing a ______, so he could get his cigarette counts to freeze, or some such.
No, it is, indeed, in vB that sigs are global, i.e., changing on all past posts. Prior to 6/20, I had a sig, but if you’ll look at any of my old posts now, it’ll be blank (in memory of Wally, until 7/20). When I put it back in my profile, the sigs will reappear in those old posts. dpr, you’re saying that this friend put his entire message in the sig, and then changed it? That thread is gonna look REALLY funny when he changes it to some pithy one-liner!
Yes I know we can do it manually - I’ve done so in the past and plan to do so from now on, but we have a situation where people can deliberately manipulate others replies.
The reason we can’t edit our posts is to ensure people can’t change their posts and say “that’s not what I said.” All of a sudden we CAN do that if no-one notices. And while after awhile we regulars may spot the sig trick, what about the newbies?
Check out the “Intimate Advice” MPSIMS thread. The OP seemed to be a question about a threesome (My gf and I have decided to have a 3some - should we invite a male or female first?) but now it reads: What do you want for Xmas?
Confusion doesn’t reign as such but it did make an appearance.
Signature files are formatted in such a way that they’re always offset from the body of the post by a line.
If you know to look for the line, the sig file becomes apparent.
It’s how the system is set up, we’re not overly fond of this format either, but short of removing the signature option there’s nothing else we can do. We’re not going to do that.
Here’s the thread in question. Unless the question wasn’t posed until the second post, it’s not, in fact, apparent that it’s in the sig… Anyone who saw the thread before it was changed want to comment?
yes, I saw the question while it was there. Later it disappeared. I am not sure what the OP was trying to accomplish with this. Although sigs can be cute, I, for one, would not mind seeing them go if they cause any problems. They take up space and if I am so intent on posting it, I can just add it to the body of the message
