I’ve used the NJ transit train from Penn Station to Newark airport several times. It works great. You may have to ride the AirTrain that shuttles from the parking lots to the terminals to the train station.
Now once I rented a car from the Airport and I found the highways to and from the airport to be hellish. But then again I hardly ever drive in northern NJ and I believe that requires special skills.

Lise and Bill arrived Dulles on time, and have hit the road in Mom’s purple car. Keep your eyes open - it’s really purple!
