Was he at least warned? Isn’t altering quotes one thing that gets you a warning here? Or did he not use the quote function, and just paraphrase?
The statements to which Peter Morris reacted said only that the persons in question “disapproved” of the “Iraq policy.” No mention was made of which policy, (the one that got us into the mess or the failure to extricate ourselves from the mess or the any other policy), and no mention was made that anyone disapproved of the actions of the U.S. military. My objection was that Peter Morris made the incredible leap from “disapproving” a “policy” to “considering the war unjust” and, by extension, that any involvement with the military was unjust. Nothing posted by Brown Eyed Girl or Sunrazor justified that leap of logic, yet he continued to misinterpret their much more neutral statements in a much more judgmental manner. I could not see the thread doing anything beyond descending into flames while he insisted on attributing meaning to statements that were not included in the text. (For all I know, he might have accidentally dug up an acorn and both the sons of both the SDMB posters really do consider the war and the military’s role immoral and have joined or considered joining in spite of that conviction, but that possibility is not included in the texts he quoted and that he insisted was fact and truth.)
He did not abuse the SDMB Quote rule, that i saw. He would accurately quote a passage, then declare that it meant something different than the text or he would tak a word out of context and claim that it made some point that he needed for his argument. For example, he took a sentence that mentioned several competing interests for an individual that included the word salary and insisted that we had been told that that individual had joined for the purpose of getting paid.
We do not hand out Warnings for sloppy logic or I would have banned a lot more posters in GD by now.
Ah, gotcha. I wasn’t sure. Thanks.
Well he… did do… some of this…
Some of the words that were skipped were important but did not fit his view.
ETA changed a lot with some. There were just a few quotes but he did manage to leave some important stuff out.
