The list takes the top million websites, and represents it in graphical format using the site’s favicon. Google.com, of course, dominates the picture.
P.S. I am amazed! The SDMB People Pages site (nouilles.info) is on there too! Very tiny, it’s true, but it’s on there!
P.P.S. I hate to beg, but if someone is a graphic artist and likes to design favicons, and can make a better favicon for the SDMB People Pages site, I would be eternally grateful. Right now the favicon is “aw” for Arnold Winkelried, but a much better one would somehow include references to the Message Board without being a copy of the SD favicon.
This should be within your skills, Arnold (it’s not mine; I’m lucky if I can edit a prewritten CSS without errors) – but, after clearing it with Ed, use the SDMB logo with colors reversed. That’s a standard bit of heraldic graphic technique that traditionally means “related to but not an integral part of” visually and subliminally to the lay viewer.
Thank you Polycarp! That is not a bad idea. I don’t know if the owners of the logo would go for it, but I could ask.
Which reminds me - I would dearly love to have a picture of you and Skulldigger for the People Pages. I hate to sound like a broken record (I’m pretty sure I’ve asked you before), but where are your photos?
Probably because there is not one big porn site that attracts the vast majority of traffic, but rather a whole bunch of smaller (dare I say specialized?) sites.
Your Disney Shorts site has a lot of information that can’t be found anywhere else, on a popular topic. I’m not surprised it’s there.
I was more surprised that SD affiliated sites (like Teemings, or the People Pages) had enough traffic to be listed.
Though, when I first saw the page, I wasn’t even sure if straightdope.com would appear, I didn’t know if it was in the top million sites on the internet.
The website said it’s using Alexa traffic data. Apparently there’s a website called Alexa that ranks sites based on how many visitors you get.
I went here: Alexa Top Sites and found these numbers:
Site Information for straightdope.com
Alexa Traffic Rank: 8,036
Traffic Rank in US: 2,342
Sites Linking In: 4,166
Site Information for nouilles.info
Alexa Traffic Rank: 222,264
Traffic Rank in US: 68,325
Sites Linking In: 18
OK, I need to do a lot more work before I can beat Facebook, but I showed up in the big picture of favicons that someone created (see the OP) so I’m still going to brag about it.
