Hey Texas - Get Over Yourself

Incorrect. Don’t y’all back East study History? Hawaii certainly was an independent country prior to becoming a US territory and then the 50th State. Oh, and California, my 'umble 'ome, considered itself a country for a tad prior to joining the US. And, IIRC, there was that little experiment called Deseret a while back.

you ar right…mea culpa. i glanced at it quickly and saw it to be a reply toyour post from cardinal.

just same, its an ignorant remark.

git a rope

If I thought it was meant seriously I’d agree, but I’m pretty sure that whole post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek (as opposed to Skoal-in-cheek).

Chef Troy is right, Bad News Baboon, 'twas I that pulled out the r-word.

I figured that so long as everyone was engaging in stereotypes and generalities I might as well take my piece of flesh, too.

FWIW, I had fun when I visited Dallas last year. And I want to visit Houston and San Antonio. Still don’t think they lay a finger on my beloved OC

abuse angel here’s the cite for the air quality reference Houston air quality sucks

And the starting kids late in school for high school football was something I made up because it sounds like something a bunch of football-lovin’ Texas redneck yokels would do

Never cared for Texas myself. I’ve been through it and stayed there a number of times… but I dislike it for many of the same reasons I disliked Arizona. I’m a northern east coast girl at heart. My ideal climate/scenery/etc is probably Connecticut/Massachusetts/Upstate NY.

Having lived the vast majority of my life in Texas (Ft. Worth, with a college break down in Austin) but having spent time in
both Cali and N.Y. for relative visits and business, I tend to sum up the differences between Texas and the the coastal states
thus:
When driving in Cali or N.Y. if I was gullible enough to actually use my turn signals to change lanes, I’d have people
speed up to fill the space I was aiming for for no other reason than to be nasty.
When driving in Texas on occasion I’ve had to pull off the side of the road with car trouble and in every case, someone has
pulled up behind me within 5 minutes to see if I needed help.

What does that say about the relative merits?

Monty:

California changed hands several times as possessions of other countries, but was never a sovereign nation in and of itself. At best, there was a the short period when it had the local provincial government of Alta California, but that’s pushing it. Hawaii was a US possession prior to it’s entrance into the the US of A. Exactly as I said previously, Texas is the only only state to enter the Union as a sovereign nation IMMEDIATELY prior to its admittance. I’ll give it to you that I should’ve said “immediately prior” to be more explicitly clear, but my point stands.

(puts down shotgun)

**Neurotik **
alright partnah, y’alls off the hook.

(squints eyes)

but don’t think I aint watchin ya.
ugh. thats one of the few things that REALLY pisses me off:

people that feel a need to put Texans down for no real reason.
Nymaz, its true what you said.
a big difference i also found:
when in California, if you went to someone’s house, they’d maybe offer a drink.

in Texas, it’s more like: oh would you like a coke? are you hungry? oh help yourself to the fridge, etc…

People here seem genuinely caring, for the most part.

p.s. I live in Fort Worth, too!

Pay attention Neurotic. The fair (as in mediocre) El Lay has taken back that crown. So eat smog, pal!
This is fun!

Texas vs. California: you lotus-eaters got to admit that Dallas lumber truck chase yesterday beat the crap out of your white Ford Bronco chase of 1994.

Dallas lumber truck chase? Sounds intriguing…

And LA is really back on top of the pollution standings?

WOOHOO!!!

We’re #1!
We’re #1!
We’re #1!

Leave it to Texans to choke in the final minutes and relinquish the title. What a bunch of losers. Can’t even keep their pollution levels up.

By the by, shouldn’t be El Ay? Where does this El Lay come from? LA = el ay. Only ignorant Texans could screw up abbreviations. Hukt on fonicks wurckt fer us, y’all!

Oh, get off it, Cheffie. You know you love it when we call you “redneck.”

(I’m a New Yorker who’s never been to Texas…wait, I did change planes once in Dallas, does that count?..but I just have drop by to say that I adore the IDEA of Texas.)

Hey! Even the stereotype of Northern California doesn’t include smog. We leave that (true) stereotype to our friends in the southland.

i like “Austin City Limits”. LBJ seemed like a pretty good guy. i guess Texas can’t be all bad.

i still like, and ain’t leavin’ my little cave in the middle of nowhere, though.

I believe the OP’s point was that Cowboys fans go on and on about that one team, which might be understandable in a city with only one pro sports franchise, but is silly in a city like Dallas with other sports offerings.

I dearly love Texas, but God knows I HATE the Cowboys ('cept for Tom Landry and Roger Staubach, who are impossible to hate), so I understand the OP’s feelings on this narrow point.

Actually, Macro; is your assertion valid? Or does any other state fly its flag at the same height as the national ensign when the two are flown side-by-side? After all, it’s impossible to fly the two flags at the same height on the same pole!

I don’t think that he was talking about cities with only one sports franchise. He mentioned LA Lakers…um, what about the Clippers (ok, maybe not a REAL sports franchise), Kings, and Dodgers? St. Louis has the Rams and the Blues. The only city on that list with only one franchise was Green Bay.

I think the common denominator is rabid fans.

chef, that’s what i meant. that the op never levied an insult at any city but dallas, as though the whole state revolves around one city. not that dallas is so inconsequential, but it’s not exactly the apple of our eye, either.

Neurotik, two points. a) newer reports than that say la is the bad air king again. b) smog and bad air are not the exact same thing. if i recall, the bad air in houston is not solely caused by pollution. a lot of it has to do with humidity, and even when our air is technically worse, la still has more pollution. now, ianas(cientist), so i could be wrong. but that’s what i heard.

monty, afaik, texas is the only state to fly its flag at the same height as the national flag. we were told in jr. high texas studies that this was part of the agreement when we gave up our sovereignty to join the us.

the thing that irritates me is when businesses fly the national, state, and company flag all at the same height. hint: your company is not, was not, and never will be a sovereign nation!

Well, abuse & Macro; I just cruised through a copy of the Texas State Constitution online and noticed four really interesting facts:

[ul][li]It’s dated after the Civil War so that means it’s the one written so’s y’all could come back into the Union.[]There’s nothing in there about splitting up the State like so many people think Texas can do all by itself without Congress being party to the event. (BTW, the http://www.texas.gov site has a rendition of the “Texas Pledge of Allegiance” in which the word “indivisible” is used to describe Texas.)[]There doesn’t seem to be anything in there about flying the flag the way y’all assert.& There’s a little thing in there requiring those elected to public office to acknowledge the existence of a supreme being.[/ul][/li]
Which of those above, if any, have already been cast out or amended?
