Hey Texas - Get Over Yourself

if it’s dated after the civil war, then it’s not the one written so that we could enter the union. we entered during the war, and fought in it. also, i don’t know if the thing about the flag would actually be in our state constitution. i don’t know where it would be.

Forgot to add this:

From 10 USC Sec 175 (http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/36/175.text.html):

That doesn’t say “the State flag will not be flown at the same height as the national flag.” It does say not to fly the State flag above the national flag.

Also: the one so’s y’all could re-enter the United States of America is the constitution that counts. Why is that, you ask? It’s because you lost the Civil War. Thus, the federal government required you to write a new constitution and request to enter the nation as a State. Texas certainly did not enter the Union during the Civil War.

ok, you’re right, we did have to write up a new constitution after the war. that part slipped my mind. but we did enter the union during the war. then we seceded. we didn’t go straight from being a republic to being part of the confederacy. in fact, sam houston’s political career pretty much ended because he didn’t want texas to secede from the union.

I worked within whispering distance of the Capitol in Austin last year. My memory is that the U.S. flag most certainly flew above the Texas flag. In fact, lemme dig out my cool Texas Capitol coffee table book . . . Yep, right there on page viii, is a photo of the Stars & Stripes flying over the Lone Star.

Of course, we’ll let the federales have their flag on top, 'cause our capitol is so much prettier than theirs.

Unless you honestly believe the Civil War commenced in 1845, you certainly can’t honestly assert that Texas originally entered the Union during the Civil War.

For your edification, and obtained from http://www.thc.state.tx.us/Main_THC/Trivia.html, is the following tidbit:

Regarding his political career ending: kind of hard to say if he wouldn’t have been able to resurrect it, but he certainly wasn’t around after 1863.

Oh, and minty’s right: y’all have one cool capitol building; pink granite is assuredly cool.

Since I work for the school district that puts on the Taste of Plano at Southfork every year, I guess that makes me the resident expert here. [sub]Not really, but let’s pretend.**

Southfork is in Parker, Texas. It is also fairly close to the Plano Centre. However, the Plano Centre is located at the edge of east Plano and more than likely was built there when Plano hadn’t yet expanded west of Central Expressway. From my office to Southfork would probably take around 15-20 minutes.

Also, only the exterior shots of Southfork were using when filming Dallas. That would include the shot of the front lawn and “the house”, the driveway to the house that had trees on each side, J.R.'s circular driveway, and the swimming pool. Everything else was shot at a soundstage in California.

P.I.S.D puts on the Taste of Plano?

The Plano Centre was built in the 1990’s. When I moved to Plano in 1987 there was just an empty field there. In 1987 there was plenty of Plano west of Central.

Is this another

“you suck”

“no, you suck”

thread?

These threads are perhaps the stupidest waste of time and energy on this board. Here’s another one about New York. Brilliant.

Got stuck in a blizzard for three days in Corpus Christie when I was a kid. Had a one hour layover turn into 6 hours last time I was in Dallas. Never met anyone there who didn’t have an attitude. Rampant homophobia. Scores of beer drinking truck drivers with a gun rack displayed proudly behind their cowboy hat covered heads. ( a great combination). A bar with a mechanical bull (need I say more). And what a fine reflection of the areas tolerance evident in the news story of the black man that was dragged from the truck through town. Hell, even a president wasn’t safe there. From what I’ve seen and experienced so far, I think I’ll stay in California.

Any place that George Bush came from (either one) can’t be that good.

You can’t judge a state by its airports. It’s like judging all of California by the LAX, or New Jersy from Newark. And how did you know they were homophobes did they have a big anti-gay riot in the middle of C-terminal in the six hours you were there. Come on man you were in the airport. Everyone is an ass at the airport. Yes and we all know California has wonderful race relations. Texas may have a few small town hate crimes in the dead of night, but at least we don’t run amuck setting fires and dragging each other out of cars for a good racial beating in broad daylight and/or on camera. How does one see truck drivers from an airport? Driving Trucks is their job. They don’t need to fly. Plus they are everywhere on the road. From New York to LA you will find truck drivers hanging out in seedy bars with mechanical bulls. It seems to me you just have this stereotype of a Texan redneck that you have seen in movies that you just don’t want to even try to get rid of.

Actually the present state constitution is not the one that allowed Texas to rejoin the Union. The present one actually dates to the once created 10 or so years after that one in 1878 (or 1876 I can’t remember.) The 78 constitution got rid of all the things that had made them angry about reconstruction and also got rid of most of the governors power, arguably making the Lt. Governor the most powerful position in the state. Odd.

I’m a Texan…and the one time I was in New York City was to change planes, in a great hurry, on my way to Spain. A pity, as I think that I’d rather enjoy sight-seeing in NYC if the circumstances were right.

I do think it’s hilarious the way that people think that all Texans are alike. Texas has big cities, small towns, and vast empty spaces. We’ve got coastlines and forests. And there’s no real “Texan” mindset. Why, there’s even those of us who don’t like the Cowboys, or ANY football at all! I don’t even listen to country music voluntarily. Sometimes it just can’t be avoided, though.

i am apparently an idiot. it’s not my fault. i am a product of houston isd.

Admittedly not the most reputable source, I found this about Texas flag traditions.

http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/5256/texas.html

I think to find a reputable source for this, you’d need to look at American flag tradition, not Texas tradition.

BTW, anyone CAN fly their state flag at the same level at the US flag, but I believe they’re breaking US flag ettiquite.

Then you either didn’t read or didn’t believe that cite I provided from the federal legal code.

Look Daddy! Clarence says

it means a maxipad just got it’s wings”

South Fork (the ranch in Dallas) is NOT in Plano. Isn’t even anywhere NEAR Plano. If you can’t get such an elementary fact correct, it throws the rest of your slanted and inflammatory remarks into doubt.

[quote]

That’s simply not true, if my Texas friends have anything between their ears. I visited Plano in August, and without driving more than half an hour in any direction, we ran by that ranch a couple times. That’s nearby by any definition but maybe the locals who don’t get out of town much.

I admit to over-simplifying the point about it being “in” Plano, but it’s pretty close.

Perhaps I should be more clear. The airport wasn’t where I encountered the homophobia. That was just one of my fond memoried of being there. But I have met many Texans in my travels and at home. 9 out of 10 times a bigoted remark comes out of there mouth towards blacks, gays, mexicans, whatever. These are not images I gathered from the movies but from real-life Texans. Now, I know this is a stereotype but unfortunately I can’t seem to meet someone from Texas that hasn’t displayed these traits. Are they out there? I’m sure they are, but from my experience and IMHO, they are clearly the minority.
