thanks for the encouragement. i’m hangin in. gonna go get some community college credits somewhere and give it another shot, hopefully. anyway, thanks.
well, I’m feeling just a little bit* humbled here…
I loved college so much I didn’t want to leave. I had no major life path plotted out so I just stayed in college… when I got close to graduating with a creative arts DEC with disciplines in ceramics, theology, I switched over to Pure and Applied Sciences to study maths, physics, chem and biology. I took a couple of years off to bear children, so it took me a while.
Although I wish I’d pursued some things further, I do enjoy having such a well rounded education. I’m thinking of going back… some business/accounting education would probably come in very handy…
My high school bus driver had an English degree from Yale. I talked to the guy a fair bit, and I don’t think he was lying.
Myself, I’m working on my post doc in applied nuclear metaphysics.
I will be graduating in May with a BA in Geology from a fine liberal arts school.

**I have a BA in Journalism and Mass Communications from Washington & Lee University. No need for any further degrees.

Damn, boy, I went to R-MWC. I spent many a weekend at W & L, and used their library for writing my honors thesis.
rackensack, you brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully done.

**I have 53 hours so far. If you’re an assistant manager by the time I get through, will you hire me as a trainee?Oh well. An English degree may be fairly useless, but it could be worse. I have a friend with a masters in Women’s Studies. **
Currently they have me on fries; soon I hope to be flipping the burgers. But I will definitely consider you for a position here if I make it to Asst. Manager.
Seriously, with regards to my making light of my degree, hey, it’s my degree, and my life, and I can joke about it if I want. I have a good job in Marketing (behind the scenes - proposals, web page, etc.) that I wouldn’t trade for anything. But it took years of hell and climbing the ladder to get me here, which probably could have been avoided had I gotten a business degree. Yes, it was probably my fault for not being aggressive in finding a job that utilized my English Lit degree, but I can’t change the past.
B.S. in Zoology from LSU. Emphasis on marine biology. Minor in psychology.
M.S. in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina (Wilmington). Thesis on coral reef ecology; specifically, chemical defenses of sponges against predatory reef fishes.

Howdy, neighbor! I live on the west side…

I quit school in 11th grade (a member of the Honor Society! doh!). Got my GED about a year later. Eventually went to business school for a year and learned drafting. I have been a mechanical drafter/designer for twenty years now. All you high schoolers: please don’t quit school! It makes life a lot easier when you have a marketable skill.

I just got my BA in May from Columbia. I double majored in History and Classics. I am going to go back to school, and the sooner the better. But I still have a few serious academic decisions to make, so right now I am just taking some time in the “real world”.
MR
I hated high school, so I figgered out a way to graduate after only three years of it. So, I spent 1993 - 1999 working a series of joe jobs: data entry, gas stations, truck stops, smut shops, cocktail waitressing, secretarial, telemarketing, etc.
Last year I discovered I liked playing with computer graphics. So, now I’m a 24-year-old college freshman after a BA in Computer Graphics and Multimedia and a minor in Communications. And I suddenly remember why I hated HS.
College would be grand if it weren’t for all the fuckin’ kids.
I walked by a school once.
I have a Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering. A few years ago, I was pursuing a Master’s in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering part time, but got sick of going to school and studying while also working full time. I also got fed up of all the theoretical horseshit I was being fed with no practical application to go with it. I learn by seeing examples, not theory. I don’t desire a Master’s degree, but I am open to taking classes to improve my knowledge and performance in various areas, such as heat transfer (although this would probably have to be an undergrad class!).

[li]MA (Honours) in Politics at the University of Edinburgh (1993).[/li]
[li]Currently studying for ACCA qualification (but probably won’t complete it), and due to start CISA.[/li]
I’m also hoping to start an MBA in 2005 at the University of York (sponsored by my employer).[/ul]
That should really have been 1997, not 1993.
Not that it makes much difference.
BA in communications, Fordham University, 1987.
I had an early “mid-life crisis” shortly after I finished there, and decided I would follow my heart and do something I loved rather than just work for pay (a handy attitude that prepared me for life as a grad student, LOL). Headed back to school to be a science geek.
BA in geology, Hunter College - CUNY, 1993
PhD in geology, Columbia University, this past May
Doing some post-doc work now.
When people ask me how close I am to the Ph.D., I answer: “All I’ve got to do is finish my dissertation!” To which they reply, “really? Is that it?” The good news is, there is light at the end of the tunnel. That, and my wife has told me that I will finish in 2001. Ah, the life of an ABD.
Pantellerite, don’t you love it when they say, “Is that ALL you have to do” like it’s just a book report you have to finish? LOL! But what a great feeling to come out of the tunnel and into the light. Good luck finishing up pronto.
Fillet: Thanks, I’m working on it. Just not tonight, though. What are you doing your post-doc work in? While I’m finishing, I have a Lecturership which sort of slows down my progess–but when I do finish, I’m torn between trying to turn my current position into something permament or trying to get a post-doc. Of course, there’s no guaratee of either…
Geobabe: Thinking about that MS? Want to move out to the West Texas desert? I could hook you up with some funding!
Fillet and Geobabe (or beatle): Either of you going to make it to the GSA meeting in Reno this November?
B.S. in Computer Science, Texas A&M University, Dec 1996.
Yep… I’m an Aggie. Anyone have any good Aggie jokes?
Pantellerite, I’m working with several other people on Proterozoic “snowball Earth” paleoclimate issues. Right now most of the work is computer model-oriented, but I’m trying to get some more funding to get back into fieldwork (and stay alive on soft money for a little while longer while I try to decide what to aim for next ).
Yup, I’ll be at Reno - not presenting this time, just taking a field trip and going to see my friends’ talks. Maybe we can hook up for lunch or something, eh?
The only Aggie joke I know (told to me by an Aggie - please don’t flame me ):
Texas Aggie is going to summer school at Harvard. First day he’s walking across the Quadrangle and meets a professor in full cap and gown.
“Uh, 'scuse me Purfesser, but kin y’all tell me where the libary’s at?”
Professor says, “He-uh at Haaavaahd, we NEVUH end aah sentences with a preposition!”
Aggie thinks for a minute and replies, “Well, OK, then kin you tell me where the libary’s at, ASSHOLE?”
