The Highland Park shooter has a tattoo below his right eye. It resembles a tally of 5 sort of – where you make 4 vertical lines and then a diagonal line for the fifth entry across them. Usually though the diagonal line goes from the upper left to the lower right; the tattoo has the diagonal going from the lower left to the upper right. What’s the significance of this tattoo?
Also police have reported that the shooter was dressed in women’s clothing to help his getaway and cover his facial tattoos. AFAICT the “tally” tattoo is the only one on his face – he has a lot of tattoos on his neck, but those could be covered with a turtleneck shirt or the like. He also apparently has a beard, although I guess he could have shaved – I don’t think the picture in the news is his booking photo. So was he dressed as a Muslim woman with a hijab? How else might he have dressed to cover his tattoo and (possibly) his beard?
There appears to be another tattoo above an eyebrow, and “47” tattooed on one side between eyebrow and hairline.
As for the direction of the tally mark, I’m having trouble being sure which side is which (left vs. right) because the two photos I found show the tally tattoo apparently on the left side of his face, and the other shows it on the right side of his face – in other words, one of the photos is flipped, or perhaps one was taken in a mirror and the other directly.
NBC News has an apparent street camera photo of him in his drag, and he appears to have shaved his beard, and possibly used makeup to cover his facial tattoos. There appears to be a US flag design gaiter or scarf but it is down around his neck in the photo, so his face is exposed.
I don’t think there’s a “usual” for the diagonal fifth score, at least enough to ascribe meaning to it. A quick google image search shows both directions are in use. (Anecdote: I draw the fifth score from upper right to lower left.)
