Have you even heard of Ulysses S. Grant, Warren G. Harding, Andrew Johnson?
or Richard Nixon?
…or the elections of 1876 or 2000? Iran-Contra? (hmmm, what’s worse - a possibly shady real-estate deal or SELLING ARMS TO A SWORN ENEMY TO CIRCUMVENT CONGRESS!!! Well, let’s see here…I just don’t know…)
Bottom line? Whitewater, at worst, was kiddie pool stuff. Get over it.
Watergate, Iran-Contra and the October Surprise are much bigger scandals.
How is it the Clintons fault that the S&L went bankrupt?
“Read between the lines.”
Huh??!! What exactly does that mean? That there is some kind of secret code that will expose the Clintons as the Commies that they truly are?
As for not making restitution, ever hear of The Keating Five? They were 5 senators involved in the S&L scandals of the 1980’s and they never paid any restitution.
The Whitewater investigators dug, scratched, and bullied for years, at a cost to taxpayers of hundreds of millions of dollars. They were dedicated and ruthless. When the dust had cleared, they had to sheepishly admit that the Clintons had not committed a single crime. Bill and Hil lost every dime they invested in Whitewater. By that time, the sleuths had the Lewinsky bone in their teeth, and they never let it go. Considering all the howls of outrage over blowjobs, do you really think the inquisitors would have forgiven even the slighest misdemeanor in the Whitewater business?
Hilary-haters will never admit it, but she did nothing illegal in Whitewater.
Bill Clinton had some kind of illicit consensual sex in the White House.
He got to the presidency on his own merit. His parents really didn’t help him get anywhere.
Our current president got through college, etc., with his parents’ money and name, and he got to the presidency with the help of his brother governor and the Supreme Court that was partially put in place by this father. Our current president is raping the world.
I’ll take the guy who had the illicit sex. At least he has some.
Bush’s father made two Supreme Court appointments, and one of them (Souter) sided with the Democrats.
Try again?
I find it funny back then when everything was going on she barely could remember her own name but now they give her millions to write a book she her memory has gotten better.
Maybe they should of offered her big bucks back then?
BTW to those pointing out all the other scandals by other administrations…so what? The fact the others were wrong too doesn’t make what SHE(or her husband) did any more right.
I am not a big Bush booster myself but too many in the whole Clinton fiasto either left the country to avoid testifying or took the 5th to leave anything but a bad taste in my mouth…whether they got indictments or not.
That said I grant you Clinton got scrutinied far more than most Presidents and I really doubt ANY President would of been able to withstand it any better than they did.
My objections to the Clintons had more to do with the fact they turned the White House into a high rent Motel 6 or looting the place when they moved out…both things in my opinion were white trash things to do. He could of boinked any number of bimbos for all I cared.
Now the left is attempting to do to Bush what the right tried on Clinton…I really think this trend will get worse before it ever gets better.
Moving this political rant to the BBQ Pit.
Hillary may be devious (although I’m more inclined to agree with NurseCarmen that it depends on how you measure that) but Monica Lewinsky was nowhere near devious enough.
From what I remember of the e-mails and phone transcripts Linda Tripp so helpfully documented, Lewinsky clearly failed to understand that her connection with Clinton was not romantic, or even social. She performed a service for her uberboss, and it could have worked for her: he was about to send her off in style, with a guaranteed job at a good company! You have to give him some credit for that; many men with that kind of power would simply have had her dismissed and not given a thought to where she’d end up.
But Lewinsky took Clinton’s brush-off as if she’d been ditched by a frat boy. If she hadn’t kept whining to Tripp, no one would have ever known who hadn’t already. (The turning point, IMO, was when Bettie Currie said, “Well, actually, Ms. Lewinsky did have West Wing clearance…” but I doubt she would volunteered any such information.)
If Hilary were honest with herself as a “political realist”, she’d probably realize she will never win the presidency and settle in for a nice, long, distinguished career as a high-profile senator. I would guess that she’s smart enough to figure this out, but the hope to win the presidency is one of those things that puts its hooks into a politician and won’t let go.
For all the people who say they’re ready to vote for a woman president, and all the people who tell that to a pollster, how many will really fill in that oval in the voting booth? How many male Democrats might decide they prefer Nader all of a sudden? And don’t forget that plenty of women are migrating to the GOP side these days because “mommy-state” policies are now substantially foriegn-policy issues (where the GOP tends to win). Pollsters have already identified this shift (the Dems still leading among women, but not by as much.) None of this affects how the intelligent voter behaves perhaps, but these trends are validated on a larger scale. So she can’t really just put women voters in her pocket, and women can be just as partisan as men obviously.
Hilary has done very well for herself launching what could be a long and distinguished career in the Senate. But what do we most remember about Bob Dole these days? As an influential and popular leader in the Senate, or as a loser presidential candidate and Viagra spokesman? She’s got some money for writing this book, now if she’s truly a “political realist” she’ll put the White House years behind her and move on.
How can Laura Bush stay married to a guy that’s scummy enough to lie his way into a war and get innocent people killed for no reason on both sides? I think that’s a little more serious than a slob job.
Depending on who the other Democratic candidates are and who her running mate is, I’d certainly vote for Hillary. She’s not perfect, but what politican is? She’s smart, she seems to genuinely have the best interests of the country at heart (as well as, yes, her own interests)—and she’ll have a damn good adviser in-house, too.
But she gassed her own people!
Oh, wait …
The sad thing is people here are saying they’d vote for her just to send the Conservatives into a fit. They’d vote for her because she was a wronged woman. They’d vote for her despite the fact her attempts at renovating the health care system were a miserable failure and despite the fact she meddled in and lied about Travelgate and other Clinton fiascos.
Tell me this… you want the woman that can’t even tell when her husband, whom she already knew to have had multiple affairs, is lying to her again to be the one representing the interests of the United States in talks and negotiations with other forein leaders? No damn way. Either she’s gullible as hell or lying yet again.
People, why don’t we elect someone based on merit instead of chosing someone we feel sorry for? I feel for the lady and admire her intellect and drive but she’s ably demonstrated many times over she lacks the morality and ability required in a national leader.
Feel sorry for her? Okay.
Buy her book? Okay.
Vote for her for president? No fucking way.
Not me – I’d vote for her only if she proved herself to be intelligent, has a good grasp of the issues, and seems to be well-suited for the job. Of course, that automatically makes her more qualified than any of the other GOP candidates from the last twenty years (with the exception of Bush Sr.)…
Do we have a cite that Hillary didn’t know Bill was lying to her? After all, maybe she did know he was lying (given his track record for being a horndog), but didn’t think it was a Crisis To Destroy Her Marriage Over.
[SDMB Nostalgia Moment]
Whatever you all may think of Mrs. Clinton, but our former member John John certainly thinks she has a fat ass.
[/SDMB Nostalga Moment]
It’s what Hillary herself says in her new book.
But, is Hillary’s book a reliable cite?
We did. His name was Jimmy Carter. Unfortunately, he was too honest to make anyone happy. He tried so hard to fulfill his campaign promises…but he was too honest to make deals in order to make them happen. He told the truth to the American people…and they didn’t want to HEAR it. I watched that man grow gray in office…he aged about twenty years. Don’t talk to me about what “we” want in a President…obviously, we want to be lied to instead of accepting the truth if it doesn’t sound like what we want to hear.
Don’t talk to me about how what the voters want…they want someone to tell them what they want to hear.
