Some people created a bigoted email. Does it really matter whether they were all Joe Six-pack the racist plumber, or some were Jim Five-pack, the volunteer envelope-stuffer?
Higher-ups in the Clinton campaign, including Hillary herself, consistently deprecated the racist claim. Might Hillary have been more forceful in her denouncing? Probably. How does that make her a “liar”? 
I have no idea who started the rumor, but I will say this: that I fell off the Hillary bandwagon in 2008 over the last five words: “Obama is not a Muslim, as far as I know.”
