Seems like a bit of a coup for Clinton’s campaign- that’ll give Hillary a lot of exposure to a core Obama demographic; politically active college kids. What do y’all think- is this a big deal? Will it have much effect?
I think that she’s mistaken if she thinks that he’ll fawn over her like the SNL cast did. He’ll be polite but no push-over.
As already stated - depends on whether he lets her use his program for free ad time or if he actually asks her some probing questions.
Jon’s easily handled if you’re not a right-winger slinging obvious bullshit, but I think the kind of people who watch The Daily Show are too solidly Obama’s to really make a difference electorally.
And let’s not kid ourselves, this isn’t a coup for Clinton. It’s a coup for Stewart. I really doubt they had to bump Obama to get her on the show.
Stewart can be a great interviewer- I love watching the Tony Snow interviews, there’s a lot of real substance there. But in the past, he’s treated Hillary pretty lightly, and he’s never very harsh on Democrats. I’m interested to see it.
Also: Because we all saw how Colbert catapaulted Huckabee to the White House.
ETA: And look who’s up Tuesday! Yeah, a real kingmaker that Stewart.
FEI: Ralph Nader.

It could be a really good idea. Obama did well amongst voters who made their minds up on the last day. Appearing on the Daily Show could cut that. It could also backfire if Jon Stewart decides to put her feet to the fire. She’s left herself some openings (Shame on you, counting Michigan, citing Saturday Night Live in the last debate) that I can see him pouncing on.
We’ll have to wait and see.
MOst of her target audience already has their mind made up, the momentum Barack has already gained has made up the minds of a lot of people. I don’t see her on John Stewart doing much…Now if John decides to not pull any punches then it could bode bad for Clinton. However, I know Clinton wouldn’t be doing the show if she didn’t have some guarantee from his producers that he will paint her in a fair light…but then if I know John he won’t listen to his complainers I mean Producers and do whatever he wants anyway.
JS is no dummy. Harming the campaign of a presidential candidate who comes on your show is not a way to attract future presidential candidates. Even the usual “fringe” candidates that come on get the kid gloves treatment.
The Daily Show has about 1.5 million viewers on any given night, right? I don’t think that’s enough to swing Ohio or Texas her way, particularly when you consider the demographics of the Daily Show viewership - I am sure they skew for Obama and against ‘undecided.’ But there just wouldn’t be enough people watching in Texas and Ohio for this to matter.
Exactly! Hillary is banking on the Daily Show demographic being turned to her side, when in fact we’ll be sitting watching laughing at her. A college kid from Texas A&M isn’t going to watch this and all of a sudden decide to vote for Clinton.
Also, I hope everyone knows that Clinton was on Saturday Night live right? Well did you know when asked if the show would officially endorse her they said, “NO.”
Cite?
So? I wouldn’t want SNL to “officially back” me, either. Maybe a few years ago…
Do you think she’s going on the show to sharpen her comic timing?
I’m confused by your second comment, Phlosphr- are you saying she asked for an actual endorsement, other than the gag she participated in during the show?
I’m not saying anything, because I don’t know her reasons for wanting to be on the show. Hell, it could be a personal favor to Jon Stewart for all I know. I just asked for a cite for his statement of fact.
I read it this morning, let me dig up the cite.
Where did you read it?
You’re not going to find a cite for it because that’s not the sort of thing she or her people are going to say, atomicbadgerrace. But politicians do talk shows to reach the audience of the show and to get free news coverage. That’s about all the reason there is for a politician to do a talk show.
Just sayin’ is all.
