Probably meant no more disrespect than Obama did with his “bitter” comment. That didn’t stop the press from reaming him out a new one over that. Why hasn’t Hillary’s comment received 1/10 the attention that the “bitter” comment did?
I agree. Last night on CNN, they played the comment but the pundits weren’t asked to critique the word choice, only whether it was accurate or not. And the concensus was that it wasn’t really accurate. Obama wouldn’t be where he is if he didn’t have appeal with whites. His broad appeal is something to be proud of, but listening to Hillary, you would think it is a bad thing since he’s not able to swig beers with the good ole boys. Does she think she’s some radical person for pandering to this demographic? Why should the vote of a factory worker be more important than the “egg-head” engineer who designs the factory’s machinary? Isn’t globilization screwing over BOTH?
It would be like Obama telling a crowd that Hillary is losing support among college-educated people, and therefore isn’t electable. If he even hinted at such a sentiment, he’d be solidifying his “elitist” status. Better yet, if he had said blacks with no college degrees were coming out for him, people would be scratching their heads, trying to figure out why he would want those people in his corner. But apparently anti-intellectual, anti-self-made success is okay when you’re losing a fight. Thanks for teaching us the way, Hillary. Our party has never been so unified.
Because a close race sells papers. Slamming her over this in the same week that she lost NC and barely won IN would pretty much finish her off*. She’s going to win WV and KY regardless, so the media want to give her room to breathe, let her get back on her feet, and [del]milk[/del] fight this thing for as many paper-selling, front-page days as she can.
Week of WV primary: HILLARY WINS - OBAMA CAN’T GET WHITE HILLBILLY VOTERS
Week of KY/OR primary: HILLARY WINS KY, DOESN’T LOSE TOO BADLY IN OREGON
Week of PR primary: OBAMA HAS ENOUGH DELEGATES FOR NOMINATION - BUT CAN’T GET HISPANICS (OR WHITE FOLKS, REMEMBER?)
He’s only up +4 pledged delegates for March, April, and May… but he opened up a can of whoop-ass back in February and there are no more states left for her to answer back with. The math is the same; he will cross the finish line first, which means she will not. Admitting that means nobody sells papers.

- If you assume the average reader is ignoring the numbers and does not believe that she’s already finished.

This is the brush that conservatives use when they come out against unions: union members are lazy, anti-intellectual, and want to protect cushy lazy jobs at the expense of entrepreneurial self-made businessmen. When Hillary panders to that crowd (“It’s okay to want a cushy job that earns more for you than you earn for the company”) the free-market libertarian in me screams, and my hand reaches for the Republican lever. Of course, she doesn’t truck with all that fancy-pants economist talk. If she were an engineer, she’d probably vote to repeal the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, or just wish it away with a policy statement.
'Cuz as we all know, it’s perfectly all right for blacks and Hispanics to practice identity politics but a crime against God and nature for whites to do it.
Blatant racial appeals to non-whites have been a major part of the Democratic Party’s political strategy for decades. If it’s okay for you to play that card, that it’s okay for whites to play it, too.
Soooo. You know of non-white candidates that win elections by disenfranchising white voters. I’d like to see how that’s done.
And no, it isn’t perfectly all right for a black candidate to run on a ‘vote for me, my dark brothers, cuz I’m black and my opponent is white!’ platform. Who said it was?
Amen- do you think its just coincidence that Obama is getting the majority of the black vote, that all the blacks voting for him just so happen to agree with his politics?
I for one don’t really care for HRC, but am pulling for her to win as that would mean Bill would be hand- sure he would have no official duties, but anyone who thinks he would no effect on domestic on foreign affairs is fooling themselves- he commands respect with most nations leaders that Obama simply hasn’t earned yet.
And again, HRC hasn’t lost anything yet. Neither one will go to the convention with enough votes for automatic nomination, which means it will go to the superdelegates who can change their vote at the convention, so why shouldn’t she keep trying to convince them she’s the best choice? And if she does, it wouldn’t be cheating or stealing, but using a silly system to her advantage, like Dubya did in 2000.
I think that pretty well speaks for itself, and it’s one of the reasons I wouldn’t vote for her.
Obama was never guaranteed the black vote. Polls weren’t giving Obama 90 percent of the black vote in January - he only started getting these levels of support when it looked like he might have a chance to win. Remember “Is he black enough?” Then the Clintons started dismissing the black vote and here we are.
You can tell the difference between a candidate’s platform and the reasons people choose to vote for them, right? One of them, the candidate controls; the other, they do not. You appear to be trying to rebut a point about the former with reference to the latter. This is very silly.
That’s what I’m saying! Hillary throws out that factoid about being popular among uneducated whites, and we’re supposed to take that as a sign of her superiority as a candidate? I think it would be more obvious to most people’s ears how bizarre this sounds if she hadn’t been making it all about whites. “Hard-working Americans” has long been political panderese for “uneducated whites”, so she can tout their support as if it’s a note-worthy accomplishment. That only works if you’re talking about whites, though. Everyone knows that “uneducated blacks” are on welfare and/or in prison. And “uneducated Latinos” are most likely illegal aliens. “Uneducated whites” are cool, though. Because they are the salt-of-the-earth people.
We need more pepper-of-the-earth people.
I have one last thing to say, Hillary, on this subject now that it is clear you will not get the party nomination:
Don’t make me wag my finger at you again!
P.S. Does anyone know the whos, whys and wherefores of that?
That is the most hilarious thing ever.
I must admit I stole it from Fark. It was in a thread about this very subject. I really wonder who they are and what they are frowning about.
Rev Wright?
Why is this a good thing? Do you want every First Spouse screwing around with policy just because they are fucking the President? Bad idea.
I won’t vote for HRC because of Bill’s undue influence on policy.
You kidding? Try to imagine how long she has awaited the day when she could say “Sorry, hon, but you don’t have that level of security clearance.”
As for late I’ve again become all confused about America’s race-branding. And I won’t even touch the scientific arguments that demonstrate that there’s no thing as a “race.” Seriously, I still don’t get “it.” I mean I lived Stateside over sixteen years all together and, apparently, I remain clueless on the matter. Hell, I don’t do so well here (Dom Rep) either. I’m told I’m quite the white-man and get called ‘rubio’ meaning, literally meaning (blonde, and for years to boot. 'cept I was never one – chestnut colored hair with some reddish hues when I had it, gray what little it’s left.
If this seems somewhat off topic, it’s just that I’d like to know what “race” my American/Spaniard/Irish mix of a son son so I can finally tell him what ‘color’ he is – or perceived by “Americans With A PHD on Race Determination” of course. I can’t come-up with a word ATM… however ‘obsessed’ does comes to mind. Seriously, this whole menalin issue is beyond belief. Hellooo? 21th Century calling?..eight years into it and this bizarre color-chart is still such a hot topic?
I mean, I was raised racist in many a ways (and I totally relate to XT’s comments on the other thread)…but shit! I’ve had forty years to learn better than I was culturally indoctrinated! Fuck excuses.
I just hope I live long to see it end. Score one for my generation if it does.
</to continue the off-topic that blew me way at the Obam’s VP thread</end off topic>
Would and trust that I will make some time to start a thorough OP on this rather baffling issue. At least as I see it and read it.
Hey, I’m an African American/Puerto Rican born and raised New Yorker and I had no idea Hispanics couldn’t be white.
Well, technicly, they are, of course, if you stretch it some… Bit of the Moorish blended in, don’t you know. To be truly white, you pretty much have to be descended from people so pale that they are forced to get their vitamin D from beer.
