oute 31 in New Jersey runs north from Trenton. It runs right past The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). The state was spending a lot of money on signs that kept getting stolen by the students. That pretty much stopped when they changed the name to Route 31 from its original designation Route 69.

Similarly, US 666 was changed to US 491, partially because the US 66 it had been a spur of was subsumed into I 40 but also because people kept stealing the signs.

Although sign theft has always been a problem along this highway, thefts reached epidemic proportions when the pending number change was announced. Within days of the announcement, virtually every US 666 sign had been stolen, some for sale on eBay.[34] Officials in Utah reported that five entire sign assemblies had been cut down with a chainsaw and stolen, while New Mexico officials reported that even signs welded to metal posts, as a theft deterrent, had been stolen. Officials speculated from one scene that someone had intentionally crashed a car into the sign post to break the welds.[26]

Ontario has had a Highway 69 for years. I don’t know if its signs got stolen, but I never drove it frequently enough to know where each one was:

True story: Somewhere in Texas – probably I-10 – there is a mile marker sign that is/was constantly stolen, so the Highway Dept. scooted a little further down the road and posted “Mile 419 1/2.” Or something like that.

In Colorado, mile marker 420 on I-70 got stolen so many times they eventually replaced it with one that read 419.99.

I’ve heard of things like that, and it’s always surprised me that people didn’t find those more novel versions even more appealing. If I did partake, I would love to have a (replica) 419.99 sign.

The town I grew up in had a drive-in theater that closed in 1979. The last movie it showed was Clash of the Titans. Some wank stole the a and the n from Titans. It was that way for several months after the place closed. Big yux.

It’s a weed/pot/cannabis reference.

April 20th (4-20) is a big holiday and activism day for legalizing it, lots of people smoke at 4:20 p.m. and so forth.

(Actual story: it’s a state recreation area in southeastern Wisconsin; the land was originally planned to be the home of Bong Air Force Base, which would have been named for Richard Bong, a fighter pilot ace during World War II, who was from Wisconsin; the AFB project was cancelled partway through development, and the land eventually was turned over to the state, which built it into a recreation area. And, yes, the road signs get stolen a lot .)

It was a small airport for awhile - the former runways are clearly visible from the air. A bunch of us Wisconsin-based ultralight pilots used to buzz the former runways for shits and giggles.

Texan here, but since Arkansas seems to appear a lot in the thread: “Toad Suck Ferry” is a bizarre name. So weird that I actually diverted a trip to ride on it many years ago. According to this article, it’s back in service again. Along with the aptly named “Toad Suck Towboat”. I really need that T-shirt.
