Hmmmm. I'm skeptical [road signs]

My in-laws had a house in a resort development where they named the streets after past presidents. Their place was on Nixon Lane, overlooking Nixon beach.

I’ve posted this before, but it fits in well here. (Plus, as it happens, I walked past the sign yesterday.)

If you’re using a phone you’ll probably want to know that the sign reads:

KEERE STREET
NO THROUGH ROAD
Although recorded in history that George IV when Prince Regent drove a coach and four down Keere Street for a wager, access by vehicles to and from the High Street is now forbidden
By Order
Lewes District Council

And as I observed before, it was ever thus: one rule for them…

ETA “If you’re using a phone you’ll probably want to know that the sign reads…” - HAH! - I didn’t realize that copying the image would turn zoom off. You’ll have to zoom in with the + button on bottom right. Sorry 'bout that.

Well, to be fair, the sign does say access is forbidden now, not when the Prince Regent drove a coach and four down the street…

Also, there’s actually a vehicle on the street in that picture. One wonders, does that car belong to the current Prince Regent? More seriously, if they actually wanted to block vehicle access to that street, and had the money for a fancy historical marker, you’d think they could have put some sort of barrier up as well.

Another way to block vehicle access would be to park a vehicle in the street - aha, had you thought of that?

I have wondered from time to time how the residents of Bucksnort, Tennessee can say that with a straight face.

There was a Nixon New Jersey. It was not named after the president. In Band of Brothers Lewis Nixon tells his friend Dick Winters he can get him a job at Nixon Nitration Works in Nixon NJ because he knows the owners.

Nixon was actually an unincorporated part of Raritan Township. Since there were several other towns named Raritan in New Jersey they decided to change the name. It was put to a vote. At the time Richard Nixon was the Vice President but that’s not who it would be named for. Nixon was on the ballot as the name but the people voted to name the town after another former resident. Menlo Park is another unincorporated part of town and the residents decided to name it Edison.

Here is another frequently stolen sign.

Toadsuck is famous. You probably can get t-shirts.

Hey, I know where that is!

Dang, @Gatopescado you were close to my house. You shoulda dropped in.

My favorite is the next creek crossing ‘Bear Creek relief’

I stopped but never got much relief.:face_with_hand_over_mouth:

No, but the bear got some relief. Don’t drink the water…

Apparently, while a bear may poop in the woods, he pees in the creek.

No such thread would be complete without the sign to Boring, Oregon. There is a town in Oregon named Boring, and the exit off of highway 212 also leads to Oregon City, another real town, so you end up with this sign:

I want to go here. Now. | Funny signs, Funny road signs, Funny street signs (pinterest.com)

LOL :grinning: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hi, Dr.Deth,
The thing about the Bear Creek and Bear Creek relief’ there was no water in either. I hear the little bridge thingy is the ‘low’ water bridge.

Does that even sound logical?
Not to me.
'Cause, ya know? I’m skeptical.

No story on signage would be complete without an obligatory mention:

Going Northbound towards Mt Shasta on I-5, in the entertaining State of California, look for the exit sign to Weed.

We’ve driven I-5 a zillion times, and we still giggle at Weed.

Here’s a sign in Pennsylvania that is constantly stolen.

I have a dirty sense of humor, but I’m not getting this one … 'lil help, plz?
