I baked oatmeal cookies yesterday. OK, they weren’t for any particular reason or season - I just wanted to make them. Since there are just 2 of us in the household, I don’t do the big baking I used to when there were 3 of us… yeah.
Still, I wanna know - do you have any holiday baking (or other food) traditions?
I have no traditions. I’ve done Chinese food for Christmas, and I once did a Cajun style Christmas dinner(Blackened Cornish Hen, red beans and rice, green beans with jalapenos and ham).
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 51 Amurrkin out and cloudy with the possibility of rain this mornin’ and a predicted high of 74 and mostly cloudy for the day. The big rain is supposed to be tomorrow. We shall see. Today’s excitatement includes the bug man comin’ around eight this mornin’ and a general spiffin’ of da cave. I’m also goin’ to the sto’ and probably the liberry.
As to holiday bakin’, well, not so much. I did bake some chawklit chip cookies last Thursday but that’s just cause I wanted some. We are havin’ some friends over this Sattidy for a little gatherin’ that includes the annual showin’ of A Tuna Christmas. Nuttin’ fancy, jambalaya, a green sallit, garlic bread and probably a chawklit cake. Sis and I will be makin’ Christmas dindin for the family so I guess that counts as sump’n.
Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy wants to be fed. I also need to get purtified before bug man gets here.
My mother bakes like crazy! Not only the traditional cookies she’s made since forever, but every year she tries something new. She’ll have hundreds of cookies of all kinds, and we all get an assortment as a gift.
My mother-in-law used to decorate a specific kind of cookie by painting in icing. They tell me she made very ornate treats that her sons scarfed down in an instant. I don’t think I ever saw these cookies, tho - she stopped before I met her. Now, she can barely see to do ordinary cooking and baking.
My sis-in-law does a fair amount of baking, her apple pies are most excellent and the chocolate chip cookies are not far behind. Me? Single guy who doesn’t even cook all that much, so nothing much here.
The rain swampy is expecting tomorrow is passing through here this morning…no thunder-boomers, but a good steady rain all night, which we needed. Will dress presently and go argue with the phone folks some more (they were supposed to be out last week to get service restored and were no-shows).
I don’t have any holiday baking traditions, I have in the past made both Christmas cake and puds but 'im indoors doesn’t like either of them and I don’t want to be eating them all through January so I don’t bother any more. Sometimes, I’ve made a cake and shared it with a couple of friends so we all get a small amount that’s just enough for one person.
I enjoy baking, and I often bake stuff for the office when I’ve got time although at the moment we have so many boxes of cake, biscuits and chocolate from our academic staff, we probably won’t need any more for ages.
It’s damp and dismal here today, and I have meetings all week (at least two per day) so that will keep me busy but not necessarily amused. The chimney man has been round to do some repairs and I’m told that we have now been flaunched…and I never felt a thing! There’s some work that needs to be done on the small flat roof over the kitchen too so we need to sort that out eventually. I have a roofing company in mind for that one, just need to get them to look at it and give us a quote.
Shadow has so far refused to pee in the non-absorbent litter so I can get a urine sample off to the vets. I will shut him in the living room again tonight and see if that encourages him to produce. He was shut in last night but I woke up at about 3am to find him snuggled round my feet, so someone opened the door and he managed to get out. Bet he went straight outside for a wee. Bloomin’ cats.
We used to make what we called “booze balls” for Christmas/New Years, but one of the key ingredients (brown-edge wafers) has disappeared from the face of the Earth. Nilla wafers are only a semi-acceptable substitute, so I haven’t made them for years. Even if I did make them, no one would eat them because we have a celiac person and two nut-allergy people in the family and pecans are another key ingredient.
It’s raining here. I need to make an appointment for my car at the fixit shop and make more hats. Two down, five to go.
I woke up feelin’ hangoverish. Mouth was all dry. My old heater had a humidifier built in but the HVAC guy talked me out of that for the new one; said it’s not good for the house as you end up with moisture where you don’t want it. I guess I should get one for the bedroom, or at least a bowl of water to leave in there. I also had a haddock; which is fishy iffn you ask me as I had no alcohol yestidy & only one beer on Satidy night; mainly because the waiteress sucked.
We went out to a comedy-on-the-road show; where they bring a comedy show into a bar/restaurant that is not normally a comedy club other than this one special night. It was in their uninsulated three-season room, which apparently has two settings: ceiling heaters on/sweltering & ceiling heaters off/frigid. :smack:
When I got there, my fiends were ordering as I was sitting down, so I just asked for a glass of water. They got their food, I again asked for water. Another friend comes in & sits next to me, she orders a wine & a (separate) water, I again ask for a water, & the beer list as there isn’t one on the table. She got her wine & I get the list, but again, no water. :smack:
I order a beer & she brings one, but not what I asked for (bottle vs. tap) -
Oh, we don’t have it on tap now." Despite me asking if they have it on tap yet (it was listed on the ‘coming soon’ section). :smack:
I even see her walking around a couple of times with a water on her tray, looking all confused as to who ordered it. :smack: :smack:
Finally she brings the (separate) checks around. My friend next to me has a wine & a beer on it so she thinks we got a combined check, but when I look it wasn’t what I got, it was a different cheaper beer. Then she brings my check so I ask the waitress what the one beer is, apparently it was someone else’s at the far end of the table, who neither of us knew. Sure, she’ll buy some random stranger, who she didn’t even talk to or get the name of a drink. :smack:
Yeah, I won’t be going to their next one there.
No holiday baking traditions for me…I love to cook, but have never really gotten into the baking thing. However, a friend at work challenged has been hinting pretty persistently at me that she’d love me to make her a batch of baklava, which I haven’t done in forever. I’m thinking I might do it, and bring it into the office for everyone.
Today starts the last of my “trying to use all my vacation days” project. I’m off all week, and I’m really eyeing a goal of finishing that last wall in my living room that I started painting a while back. Just a quick trip to Lowes for a couple of things, and I should have that wall conquered. One day I will learn to just never start any home improvement project, so I won’t have to worry about finishing it!
So much snow. Various news sources are saying 4-8 or 7-10, depending on where you click to get your info. BoyRoomie was the sweetest and cleaned off my car for me while I was getting ready for work, but I’ll still have to clean it off in order to go get lunch, or go home eventually.
Problematic Co-Worker is on vacation this week, so I’m looking forward to the quiet. I like her as a person, I have actively grown to hate working with her. She’s either utterly helpless and needs me for every little thing, or she’s talking to me like she thinks I’m an idiot. There’s very little in between. I hate job hunting, but I’m getting ready for it. It’ll be nice to work for a place with holidays and snow days and hey … if I’m dreaming, maybe benefits and full vacation time.
This weekend was a lot of watching television and general sloth. We did manage to get some cleaning and food shopping done, as well as prep slow-cooker meals for the whole week, so all the tv was totally deserved.
Huh? Oh, the OP … hm … we don’t have any holiday baking traditions short of calling the bakery and ordering my birthday cake, which will not be accepted or paid for if it has even the smallest hint of Christmas on it. I fully expect that one of these years I’m going to pick up a cake that has “Happy Birthday Jessie, No Christmas” just written right on there.
It’s also the anniversary of Sah-son’s father’s death. He never remembers it and I’m not going to remind him.
Tomorrow will be Psych Final Day, and Wednesday will be groceries day since snow may happen on Thorsday.
I don’t know if I am going to the party on Saturday, we might have freezing rain. Then Sunday is supposed to be back up in the 40s. I wonder if my cousin could change the party from Saturday to Sunday.
I was just telling a friend about how much Sah-dog has aged in the two years we’ve lived here. He never tries to run out the gate anymore and seldom goes past the shed. Not today! The little brat, the back gate is open and I guess he can see light and dark enough to notice, and he took off for it. I had to chase after him, fortunately he doesn’t move as fast as he used to.
Cat is being a brat today, too. I got some new treats for him, he is going crazy for them and won’t leave me alone until he gets more. He’s totally uninterested in his new toys. Of course.
I used to do a lot of holiday baking, but not anymore. Partly because my mother would bitch about it, I always made too many cookies, or the wrong kind, or whatever. Then because of pet-sitting I wouldn’t have time. Thanksgiving through New Years was crazy busy, it’s when I got into the habit of getting my shopping done before Thanksgiving.
Nice lunch surprise - someone brought the leftover cake from the company party and put it in our break room. YUM!! It would have been more yum if it had been the chocolate one, but it was strawberry, and it was still yum.
Just what I needed on a dreary, gray day.
I did find out that the office isn’t alarmed, so we could have come in on Saturday. Now I know.
Baking. We try to make cut out cookies that you decorate yourself. The kids have fun with those. We usually make something for holiday dinners. I used to make bouche de noel, but haven’t done that in a few years.
I’m having a blurfy day. Hopefully things will improve. Stoopid world.
One of my best friends just sent me a picture of her (medical) marijuana stock, a giant tub of holiday popcorn, and the tv showing the Netflix home screen. She was mistakenly under the impression that I was having a snow day and could come over. I am very sad now.
I’m about to go look up what that actually is, but my brain is screaming CHRISTMAS MOUTH so loud I can’t stop giggling.
ETA: Ah. French spelling mishap. I get it now. But Christmas Mouth is probably going to be my favorite thing that happened today.
