Just finished watching the Tina Turner special on CBS, and I have to say that I really like the Target holiday commercials. They have a very European feel about them, sort of like what Old Navy and The Gap want to be, but only well-done. I really like Tina’s remake of Prince’s “Baby, I’m a Star” and the visuals work really well with the song.
Anybody else have any favorite holiday commercials this year?
I like the “slow down” ad from the Gap, but only because the music they used is from Low’s christmas album. My best friend is friends with the band, so I have to like 'em.
Plus, they’re really good.
It has got to be the Lowe’s ad where the boy comes downstairs and says, “Daddy, I can’t sleep.” And dad carries him back upstairs and says, “Oh, Billy (or whatever the kid’s name is), you’re just excited about tomorrow.” And when they walk in the kid’s room it’s all lit up with Christmas lights.
Why is this so funny for me? Because this is just what it’s like sleeping at my in-laws’ house at Christmas. (Our last name should be Griswald.) My husband says it was like that as a kid too. I love that commercial.
I like the computer store one where the robot says weeping, weeping when the employees take away his beloved printer/copier/fax. I especially like the way he perks up when they show him a surge protector. Like a surge protector is a suitable substitute for a sophisticated piece of machinery like a copier/printer/fax!
Apricot, that’s a Staples ad, and I like it, too. (My husband has stock in the company.)
But my personal faves this year are the Amazon Male Chorus, various middle-aged/elderly men singing cheesy songs a’la Mitch Miller. The lyrics are cute, the music is flawless and I never fail to end up guffawing.
I’m easily amused…the Home Depot ads, that show a cosy living room, dog snoozing on the rug, Christmas tree alight, snow outside the windows, the usual stuff.
The expected “thump” and “ho, ho, ho”; the dog wakes up, the roofline grunting escalates…then the living room ceiling cracks, caves and collapses. Point: hope for home repair tools.
Also: woman wrapping packages in front of the twinkling Christmas tree. She gets the paper pulled around then calls for help. A furry paw reaches out and holds the paper tight until she can tape it. Okay, it’s for an easy-use adhesive tape, but I really love that dog.
My favorite this year is for Capital one credit cards. It has a father returning home after shopping loaded with presents and the wife asking if he put it on a credit card. Off in the distance, coming over a hill is what best can be described as a horde of barbarians complete with battle axes and other such weapons. Just as they are about to strike the father say not to worry as its a low interest card. The look of disappointment on the horde’s faces is wonderful. It ends with the leader yelling “to the neighbors”
Plain & Peanut are walking downstairs to the Christmas tree talking about leaving the bowl of m&m’s for Santa. They turn the corner and Santa is standing there. They stare at each other and the plain one says “He does exist!” and faints right as Santa says “They do exist!” and faints.
i adore the coca cola commercials. i really like the one where all the christmas semis are coming through town…it’s just an awesome sight.
i saw a really cute one today, i don’t remember where it was for. but the family came into the living room on Xmas morning, and the room was packed with sportscars, and computers, and all sorts o extravagant gifts. Amazed, the father asks the daughter what kind of cookies she left for Santa…she replies “I din’t leave him cookies, I left him CHEESE!!!” the next scene shos her shopping in a grocery store, picking up assorted cheeses with a big smile on her face. it made me laugh.
My favorite are the eToys.com commercials. I admit, half of it is the music (you can buy the CD from the eToys.com website - I got it for my mom).
In particular, I like it when the little boy is building with his green beans and his mom watches, then gives her hubby this little nod to look at the kid. It’s just cute.
I like the Jack in the Box “Holiday Balls,” myself. Little foam antenna balls wearing ear muffs and scarves stalk a 1960’s looking family singing, “We see you when you’re sleeping, we know when you’re awake…”
Dang, you guys already listed all the ones that I like, so I won’t get descriptive.
Staples Robot–Upon first seeing it, I thought it was stupid, but then I perked up when the robot started arguing with the guy who wanted the scanner/printer. Then when he said, “But I love her!” in this sad pathetic voice I let out an amused giggle. By the end of the commercial I had literally fallen out of the chair laughing. I guess it’s just because people can’t possibly see how appliances are attractive, but that robot responds as if the surge protector is a bikini girl! Hehehe…
etoys–Okay, I hated these ones at first because I never really paid attention. Then when I saw the meaning I thought, oh, how neat! Jnr, how many songs are on that cd? It was the music that first got my attention. I wish my mom could pick out what I want just by watching me. Then again, she’d probably buy me really weird stuff…
Lowes–Did anyone else think of “Christmas Vacation?”
M&M–I love that one, too! Do they still show it?
I don’t know if this one is for Christmas or not, but it’s one of those credit card ones I think, where the little boy is spending the night at a friend’s house but he gets scared and his dad comes to pick him up in the middle of the night. Reminds me of something I would have done as a wee welf.
Dumbest commercial-- Not sure which kind of car, but it’s one where people in different scenes keep surprising each other with a car with a big bow on it. One person gets a tent, but then it lifts up to reveal the car underneath. It’s stupid to me.
