The video is not about the time in which the game’s complete, it’s showing off different ways enemies and objects can be exploited that makes it seem more like dancing.
I’m pretty impressed, but I wouldn’t let whoever did this baby-sit my kid.
Ah yes! I can’t believe I forgot about that feature. I used to use NESticle and crank the speed up for the Megaman games. Do you know of any emulators with that feature that run on Windows XP? I can’t get NESticle to work anymore, sadly.
FCE Ultra (http://xodnizel.net/fceultra/) works on my XP system. It does have a speed increase feature, although you have to hold down the ~ button to make it work.
I once saw a guy finish SMB1 in 5 minutes, which was pretty damn cool. I mentioned that to some college buddies, and by gum, we had a competition going. I never got quite past 6:40, but I did manage to finish with only 5800 points (or 5400–you’re required to get that many).
My favorite part is the round 8 level when you’re jumping on airships, and a few times he goes backwards in a seemingly suicidial move just to kill something and get a few hundred points. What a sicko
That, and how he purposely avoids getting a third star (to save time). I thought he had messed up his ‘perfect game’ for a while.
This is the kind of thing that has me wondering if Donkey Kong is sitting at home in his shorts, swigging beer, sinking into depression, telling anyone who’ll listen: “I made that little bastard and now he won’t return my calls!”
Of course Donkey Kong jr. shows up occasionally to round up all the empties. “You’re still tops, Dad!”
“Shaddup, you little creep! What the hell do you know about this business, anyway, ya damn snapjaw-dodger? I used to be big in this town!”
See, that’s what got me too. It’s not so much the speed, it’s the frickin’ elegance. When he’s hopping from cannonball to cannonball, racking up 99 free lives even though he’s not going to use them. Or making the suicidal jump for 200 more points. That’s class.
Wait, how did he get up to the cloud platforms with the coins in World 1-1 while still small Mario? And is it just me, or did a wrench go right through him in the first tank in World 9 (around 2:43)?
If my impression is right, this is a total hack, which is disappointing.
Part A: He bounces off the flying turtle and gets propelled up into the clouds. Watch closely – you’ll see the turtle lose its wings and Mario get credited with 100 points. This part is no big deal; I’ve done it before as well.
Part B: No, he finagles around the wrench. It’s a rather elegant move. The website escapes me, but one of these had a frame-by-frame analysis of this particular move and the conclusion was that nothing odd happened.
I personally don’t think it’s a hack. At the very worst, it might have been played at a slowed-down speed. (Even then, it still would take a hell of a lot of talent to pull everything off even at 1/16 of the pace.) They seem to have these “time attack” contests pretty regular out there in Asia, so it’s not surprising something remarkable like this might come out of it.
Its certainly impressive, but I’d need to see more proof that there’s no editing or emulator tricks. Its not so much the skill as all the overly close calls he has with cannonballs and the way he often barely gets on top of things. Seems a little too borderline for him to never get dinged.
What I think might be happening is that with these emulators you are able to save states (the ability to save the game at anypoint.) Perhaps these guys are saving their games at the beginning of each level and playing the hell out of it until they get it absolutely perfect. I believe the levels are actually played through and no trickery is involved there; perhaps they are not played once-through, though.
That was one of the most beautiful things I have seen in my entire life. He not only finished it, he killed 95% of EVERYTHING that can be killed along the way. I think his score was well over 300,000 and he ended with 99 lives, which is amazing considering he took the shortest route.
