Holy crap! No more Dio?

Comming back as a sock (a sock puppet - pretending to be someone else) is not allowed.
Not sure if the mods would consider reinstating someone but you’d have to approach them directly, not try to sneak in the back door.

Because he supposedly made valuable contributions to GD? Because we don’t restrict posters like that?

Only Dio could generate a thread this long and growing after being banned. Wow.

Great Debates, in particular, won’t be as interesting for me to read anymore. There are really only a handful of stalwarts you can always count on to be slugging it out in there, and he was one.

If the complaint is that he posted too much and just overwhelmed everyone else, why not just put a posts per day quota on certain fora? That would certainly result in a higher signal-to-noise ratio, since fewer people would waste a post with a throwaway comment.

This is what always fascinated me. He truly lived out here, even though he claimed to have a wife and three kids, and let’s not forget a job.

How was that possible? What kind of job would permit this kind of time on the web? And if he didn’t do it at work but saved it for home, what kind of parent/spouse could he be? Staring at a screen every chance you had doesn’t leave time for much else.

I don’t know what is true or not true of his personal life, but I have a hard time believing he is a happy person or a very good husband/father. It strikes me that he is a single guy, possibly divorced, and spends the time out here as a substitute for human companionship. I have one child. A wife. I’m posting at 1:40 because it’s a time I have available. I can’t sleep. My child is asleep, so I have a few minutes. When she wakes, I’m done for the night.

If he has other boards he is on, good god, what kind of external life is possible?

My memory sucks. I just remembered the thread when Otto got banned. That was pretty big. It got him reinstated, but he didn’t come back anyway.

No thanks. The Pit is pretty much the only place I saw Dio and even that was too often. He was simply incapable of seeing any opinion other than his own and it was irritating even when I agreed with him.

We don’t, but we could. Thus my question.

Some posters have a very hard time not taking debate to a personal level. I see often times though they are also posters who have a lot to say and keep the board interesting if not at times frustrating. For them, I say, there should be a new level of ban; banned to The Pit.

Perhaps, but he was banned for personal insults outside the Pit, not for frustrating people with his opinions or refusal to see theirs.

Yeah, I know, but I wouldn’t want him to be compressing all those posts into just one area!

What?!

He spends time on other boards as well?

Good lord, just how much of his life is spent online?

I’ll agree that I always suspected he had unhappy real life and if that is true, I’m even more convinced of it.

So the adminisration should have to write special code just for Dio to restrict him to the pit? What about a poster who’s very sensitive? Should the board write a script so no one can say anything bad about them?

You follow the rules or you leave, either by choice or other means.

Yes, I had a peek at the Gir - er, that other board and saw that he is posting away over there. Dunno if he posts as much there as here tho.

Do you believe you are capable of seeing any opinion other than your own? Are you any less rigid in your ideology than Dio?

Dio being banned is predictable and I can’t really get upset about it. As others have pointed out, his inability to admit error even when he was obviously wrong, and his penchant for ‘shading the facts’ to suit his claims means that even when he posted with certainty on topics that he was generally correct about, like religion, his posts were suspect. Too bad, all in all, but he did have his chances and this at least will be the end of the Dio Show.

Unfortunately it’s a weird effect that’s seen too often on the Dope; people who don’t know anything, even the very basic prerequisite background knowledge for a subject, still hold forth on it with maximum vehemence. When it comes to issues of the Middle East, most people don’t know the difference between Hamas, Hama, and Haniyah, but that won’t stop 'em from holding a position and not backing down despite factual refutations.

Tamerlane probably qualifies as an expert, I think… at least his knowledge is generally encyclopedic and surpasses most other posters. It’d be nice to see threads populated by people who have at least baseline factual awareness, and I’d also like a pony.

I’m not really lobbying for the change but it isn’t special code or a scripting effort it is a level of access just like you have, just like I have, just like BANNED posters have, and one could be created that allows only posting in the Pit.

More so I was just commenting that if they get this many responses indicating “wow, thats really a shame” (despite many celebrating, too) it would seem they had contributed something of value. If they just couldn’t get a handle on the personal insults and we have a board where personal insults are the rule it seems like a perfect fit, in theory. In practice such a level would create complications, the person would have to be able to at least post on ATMB too, and as noted upthread, a prolific poster would quickly overflow the board if all their posts were limited to that one area.

Jesus Christ, man, what did I ever do to you to deserve that?

This is NOT the place for this sort of thing. Drop it or take it to the Pit, but don’t continue this here.

OK.
