Holy heck, is it just me or are these forums dying?

I have noticed less and less response to threads. Fewer new threads being born. I really get the feeling that these forums are dying down lately.

Not just here, either - my other hangouts are pretty dead, as well.

I hope this is just a slump. Anyway, I just haven’t had any good questions to ask lately. I wodr if that has happened to a fair amount of people.

Its just a slump. Soon someone will post something outrageous that will piss off almost everyone else on the site. Once the flaming starts, all hell will break loose

Just wait. Son of “this damnfool war” will be along soon enough. Besides, I’ve posted approximately 50 times in the last two days.

Heck, I went over 1,500 posts and didn’t notice until just now.

It will pick up. These boards have survived alot and will survive more in the future. I think it’s just alot of people took a break during the upgrade cycle.

Hmmm… Perhaps now is the time for my “Gay AIDS babies should be euthanized by black affirmative action doctors” thread that I have been saving.

Well crap, I meant to quoate Starguard.

Well, personally speaking, the boards are unstable, so I can’t read as much. Seems like every time I’m on, halfway through my usual routine I wind up with everything hanging, then “Server not found”, then “Database error!”, then 10 minutes of that, then it’s back up and I hafta log in again. It’s usually not worth the irritation, so I just close all the threads I was reading and do something else.

What GMRyujin said. I’ll be happily reading and bam! The boards go down. So I go something else and come back later.

I hope they finish what they’re doing soon, because I think that’s a large part of the reason for the slump. It’s hard to post when you can’t get in.

I open six threads at a time, then peruse each one at my leisure, to avoid just that.

Cuts back on the level of “Gah! Stupid thread title making me open a thread I have no interest in!” too.

I dunno; with the new setup, I’m actually able to get in 99% of the time that I try, as opposed to about 50% before. So I’m here every day that I’m at work.

I’ve noticed too. My main irritation is getting logged out every 20-30 minutes. At some point I tend to reduce myself to just reading.

I think that is part of it. I thought that as the boards got ‘younger’, people would be less tolerant of waiting.

So, I think I see alot of the old faces round these parts, but less of the newbies.

Twice last week I spent 45 minutes to an hour hammering out the OP to a new and hopefully entertaining thread, only to have both eaten during preview. Kinda takes the wind out of your shorts.

I open multiple threads at a time, too, but when it decides it won’t open any more, then it’s time for a break.

I have yet to have a post eaten. I guess I’ve been super, super lucky.

Ooooo, I learned my lesson with that. As soon as I’m done, I highlight and copy all the text and then hit preview. That way if it gets eaten, I can log back in and just paste it in again. Nothing worse than losing a good diatribe.

I’m also having problems with “database errors” which cut down on my reading, but I think the slump can also be attributed to a couple of things that make it harder to post:
–No “quick reply” window
–The database doesn’t reliably “remember” me, so I have to log in before I can post a lot of the time.
So, I’m posting a little less.
And if everybody posts a little less, then there is less to reply to, so we all read less, etc.

I know the database problems are being worked out. I hope they’re putting the quick relply window back.

But in the meantime, if I get a good thread idea, I’ll start it up.

They’ve been behaving themselves for me over the last week.

I’d blame most of the lull in traffic on winter burnout. I’m barely able to get out of bed these days, let alone think of charming things to say to a bunch of largely imaginary people.

Same here. I understand the magnitude of keeping a board like this in working condition, but it’s kind of a buzzkill at times.

I knew I should have written down that formula for cold fusion somewhere before I posted it…sigh
