Homophobia on the Dope

FWIW, the OP of the thread identifies as gay.

Yeah, not seeing a ton of homophobia in there. Most people are talking about the names of actual gay bars, not proposing their own.

It seems more like an internalized homophobia and PTSD thing. These people and/or their peers have been brutally assaulted and murdered, as well as vilified during the AIDS crisis, while witnessing scores of their friends dying from opportunistic diseases.

Just give us a list of things people are not allowed to joke about and be done with it.

Several Qs about the original topic.

  1. Is there such a thing as a “gay bar”?
  2. What would motivate a clientele to go there?
  3. Should a bar name be helpful for that clientele to choose a bar?
  4. Does humor have a place in marketing cleverness?

Are you for real?

  1. Yes
  2. To be around other gay people
  3. Yes
  4. Yes

Meh… in my own experience, being a somewhat woke cis dude, gay guys are fond of outrageously non-PC humor that occasionally makes me cringe, especially the sexual double-entendre. But we’d do well to remember that lesbians generally don’t go in for the juvenile stuff, and straight people probably shouldn’t instigate it at all.

So, I apologize for my contribution, even though though my gay friend who represents all gay men said it was very funny and he would definitely patronize a bar called the Head Office.

You mean just like women should just figure that a thread titled Titties, How Do Ya Like 'Em? should just not click on that one? Because objecting is so left wing? Or maybe black people should just chill with Proof That Skin Color and IQ Are Linked!

Wake up and smell the catfood, buddy.

You and I know different lesbians.

While not related to the thread in question, I was surprised by Jonathan Chance’s crack in this post:

I think he moderates that forum, so I didn’t bother reporting it – is he going to give himself a warning?

How come we can never have a thread about issues affecting women, minorities, or homosexual people on this board without some right winger running in to whine about how conservatives are the real victims here?

Did you mean to respond to me? If so, I’m not conservative and I’m not whining about how conservatives are the real victims.

You were wooshed. If Im reading right, Ritter Sport was complaining about JCs use of a homophobic term.

I didn’t think I could start a thread titled “List your favorite Asian slurs and stereotypes”, or even one about maybe Jews, but I see it would be ok if I just pretended it was a thread about naming a bar.

Correct, except I didn’t mean to whoosh anyone. I was taken aback by JC use of that term. When I saw this thread title, I wondered whether it was that post or the bar thread.

About the term JC used, until a few years ago, I didn’t even realize it was homophobic – it just seemed like an old-fashioned term for motherfucker or asshole, just something you yell at someone you’re pissed at. Then, some hockey player got in trouble for calling a ref that, and we had a thread here on the term and my eyes were opened. It was clear that back in the 50’s and 60’s, that would be considered a serious put-down, the implication that someone is gay. Probably sometime way back, motherfucker was more than just “bad thing you yelled at someone”, too.

We’re discussing this. More later.

As one who posted on the subject thread, this thread has been valuable. I’m happily heterosexual but have a number of gay friends, and when I posted I never thought about causing them any discomfort; indeed, it was simply that an old candy store in Abu Dhabi popped into my head when I saw the title and it seemed a logical answer (well, at least to me). But there was no wish on my part to (mis)characterize gays and I’m mildly shocked to see that I may have done that very thing.

Soooo…eyes opened a bit more (even at 67 I can still learn things), ignorance fought, and apologies tendered. I’ll try to do better.

Serious question - it it relevant to your perception of that post that it purported to be in reference to an actual bar with an actual gay clientele, rather than a hypothesized humorous name?

The same thing that is wrong with encountering racism and/or sexism, saying nothing and just walking away.

As one who has posted in the thread and now regret my insensitivity, I propose that the thread be closed since it is obviously causing so much justifiable offense and sorrow. My apologies for my participation in it.
