hotmail on WinCE problems

Whenever I try to logon to hotmail using my WinCE (2.12) device, I have problems logging in. I got it to work once, but now I get forwarded through the usual login sequence, but instead of my mail account, I get a 404. I know that the website is up and that I’m logged in correctly. I’ve tried clearing the cache and resetting to no avail. I get the same problem in IE3 and IE4. Any ideas?

A bump (since only 3 ppl. viewed this question before it fell off the 1st page) – and bonus info.

I also tried logging in after signing out of my passport, figuring that something in a cookie could be screwed up. Still not working.

What browser are you running on your hand-held? Might just be a browser problem.

I know that versions of Netscape as late as 4.5 and IE4 on a regular PC have problems with some of Hotmail’s features (the RTF option in Compose, the address book, IE4 constantly returns script errors) and there is actually a browser-detect that warns you about this once you’ve logged in, and asks you if you want to proceed. This is a recent development there, as MSN adds more useless crap to Hotmail.

My guess is that your hand-held browser simply isn’t supported by Hotmail. I notice a distinct lack of support in the FAQ about hand-helds (WinCE or Palm OS) but they have a blurb on how to access via Web-enabled mobile phone.

You might try configuring your email program to read offline. For obvious reasons, I can’t give you a link to this info on Hotmail without giving away my login info, but if you log in on your desktop PC, follow the link to Hotmail News from your Inbox. You should be able to get all the info you need there.

Let me know if I’ve been helpful at all…

For what it’s worth, WinCE 3.0 and the web browser that accompanies it don’t have this problem.

My guess is that your handheld’s browser is attempting to access the “full version” of Hotmail–in other words, the entire page/site as you would view it on your desktop computer. Newer versions of that browser access a slimmed-down version of Hotmail with minimal graphics, no scripts, etc.

Hope that wasn’t too confusing.
