Is that really geek cred, though? Original Recipe Kirk fired torpedoes at his fair share of bimbos.
My wife swears I’d switch teams in a heartbeat for Alton. She’s probably right.
I knew I always liked you **tumbleddown **- even if this is my first time reading something you posted.
But I admit, I don’t get the Munn/Kirk reference.
But…the characters ARE played by real people. Those people are in various stages of attractiveness.
So really, this is about people that would fuck a book? You book fuckers.
Its fun, as long as you avoid the paper cuts.
But hotness is about more than physical appareance. The way a person moves has a lot to do with it; the person’s general personality has a lot more; the person’s attitude about sex, still more.
Michelle Flaherty, Willow Rosenberg, and Lily Aldrin are all identical, as Alyson Hannigan portrays all three. But they are not identically hot.
I voted Willow, but it is a true fact that Agent Scully would have won hands down if she’d been in the poll.
See, that’s the funny thing, hotness is about physical appearance. It’s the most basic form of Teh Hawt. After that, you’ve got stuff like attitude and what not.
I’m just saying that if you ignore the physical part, which is impossible to do because these are characters played in a visual medium and you linked to pictures of the actresses in character, you don’t have enough to go on.
Or it’s just me.
Did anyone say that we’re ignoring the physical part? I thought it was just taken for granted that physical appearance was a significant portion of what we were judging here.
Can I watch?
Help?
Not to get into a semantic debate, but are “geek” girls socially awkward and “nerd” girls smart and bookish or is it the other way around?
You’ll never get the townsfolk to agree. When I use the term, geek girl requires great intelligence, obsessive tendencies, and some sort of social maladjustment. The latter doesn’t necessarily mean awkward. Abby Sciuto isn’t bashful, for instance, nor does she have early Willow’s body dysmorphia or Chloe O’Brian’s near-Aspergers–but she doesn’t have the same boundaries as most people and doesn’t quite get that.
When I was growing up:
Geek - smart and eccentric in a good way.
Nerd - smart and eccentric in a bad way.
I’m sure it flip flops around the country.
And then there’s the ever elusive “dork.” The boundaries are ill-defined at best.
I believe that’s what it says in the original post. Anywhoot, I’ve derailed this fun train for long enough.
Well, that’s true, but Lily’s now much older than Willow and Michelle.
Dork doesn’t imply intelligence the way that nerd and geek do. I know people who proudly call themselves by the latter two, but I can’t imagine anyone taking dork as anything but an insult.
But Willow didn’t turn “hawt” until she encountered her doppleganger and impersonated her. The “softer side of Sears” isn’t hot. Bustier and leather is.
My opinion:
Geeks are people with a “geekdom” - they have a specific passion for a genre or field of some time. They “geek out” over it to the point of semi- or full-blown obsession. Computer geeks, Sci Fi geeks, Band geeks - they are all about their related category. And that’s where a lot of their intelligence base lies. You can even have sport geeks - guys who can quote ever stat for every player for every year of their chose team. This geekiness causes them to be potentially socially awkward to those who don’t share their knowledge base, but among their peers they have their own levels of standard socialization. Geeks can be very socially outgoing - you just might have no idea what we are talking about.
Nerds are people who are generally socially awkward because they tend to be more introverted and introspective - more of the bookworm types who just in general don’t know how to transfer their logical sensibilities in to common socialization sense.
Dorks are people who just don’t get it. They can actually be quite dumb and that makes them socially awkward. I mean, a “dork” is a whale penis - a thing that just hangs out and can even freeze and break off the whale because it doesn’t have enough sense to come in from the cold. (whatches the male readers all cross their legs.)
(I should probably clarify that I run a group called The Charlotte Geeks, so I might be slightly biased.)
Huh. I know a lot of people who refer to themselves as dorks. They generally mean they are a bit clumsy, and have slightly eclectic interests, but aren’t so horribly into them that it makes them socially awkward.
One girl I’m thinking of likes playing old video games, has a bunch of really corny jokes, and is much hotter than anyone in this thread. The big thing is she can completely and totally hide her dorkiness. If you met her, you would think she was totally mainstream. But, get to know her a little better, and she turns into a total goofball.
I can think of a few others, but I think I’ve got the general traits down. Being hot isn’t 100% required, but looking “normal” is. You have to be able to successfully hide your dorkiness, even if you don’t normally want to. And you pretty much have to be female. But the main thing is that you have interests outside the norm, and have a quirky attitude with people you know.
And you have to be willing to make fun of yourself. The only way I’ve heard this is “I’m such a dork LOL!”
