I’ve been losing interest this season, because the medical mysteries involve so much techno-babble. My wife and I refer to this as the “Let’s overheat the dilithium crystals” syndrome. Meaningless technobabble. Even if it’s meaningful to an expert in the field, it’s Greek to us laypersons.
In this episode, comments like, “Give him an LP.” “No, we can’t because he’s so large.” “Oh, well, then, try a PBS on the RCA.” How they got from clubby hands to lung cancer was … incomprehensible. I don’t want to watch a show where I have to go to a medical online site to understand what’s happened.
The character interaction is great, but they’ve lost it in terms of the patient-of-the-week. The first couple seasons, they always explained in non-medical terms so the audience could understand. This season, it always comes down to something like, “Oh, a high RPM score! Then he’s got Fribble’s disease!” And might as well reverse the dilithium coils, while they’re at it.
