House 5/10: Baggage

A woman cannot remember who she is.

I’ll say flat out that the only reason I’ve watched this season of House is because I loved what the show was and hope it can get back to even half of that.

It was an interesting episode but once again, it seems like this show is getting lazy and doing “tell, not show”. They had some foreshadowing about the drinking, but not enough foreshadowing to make you think, “ah hah! I knew it!”

It just seems like the writing is lazy, they’re dangerously close to falling into straight soap opera territory and they need to stop trying to make things work that aren’t (“Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen! It is not going to happen!”).

I at least appreciated the creative manner in which they told the story.
“Brilliant!”
“Chase said that?”
“It was implicit.” (paraphrase) :stuck_out_tongue:

Not a big fan of the loony PR.

One teeny thing that bugged me was that they referred to the POTR as an “ultramarathoner” - and showed several close-ups of her trophies, every one of which was for a 10k.

Was horrified this a.m. to see in the paper that 13 had been Maxim’s hootest chick last year. Horrors!

Her hooters are all right, but I wouldn’t consider them the hootest.

Perhaps she just isn’t a very good ultramarathoner? And also does 10ks?

It was a kind of interesting way to tell the story, especially where the telling and what happened overlapped into each other a little bit, but this has been used before. Hopefully it doesn’t become a device they rely on, like the “letter home” episodes of MASH, which seemed to show up every season.

It was good to see Alvie back. He would drive me crazy in person, but he’s funny on TV.

Actually, this is the first episode in a while where the patient of the week was more interesting than the backstory (which is bad, since the episode concentrated on the backstory). I watch the show now more for the characters’ stories, but this showed nothing all that dramatic.

I did like the storytelling structure, but the story wasn’t all that interesting or revealing (we suspected House was having a drinking problem last week).

I thought it was obvious he had a drinking problem last week. And I groaned about it because damn, something else with the guy?

I understand people who don’t like her acting, but I really don’t understand people who don’t think she’s hot. For some reason I have an issue of Maxim with her on the cover - she’s got a a flawless body.

I’ve noticed hotness is really subjective, though. There are some people who are near universally drooled over who I really don’t find attractive at all. Like, it’s not even, “I find her attractive but not SUPER hot” but literally, “I don’t see how people find her very attractive”.

With that being said, the one thing that throws off OW’s appearance for me is her jaw. IT.IS.FRIGGIN.HUGE. But she has pretty kitty-cat eyes that balance it out.

They’re not even very hooty.

I just don’t know how I feel about this new direction for the show; I loved it when House was miserable and messed-up and did horrifying things and was brilliant enough to get away with it. A kinder, gentler House is, well, not exactly what I signed up for. Full credit to Hugh Laurie for having the acting chops to pull it all off, but it’s really dragging the show down. So, who dies next episode? My guess is 13.

i’m not seeing the lazy writing, or the kinder/gentler house that some of you are seeing. this week’s episode is, if anything, MORE inspired because it isn’t formulaic. plus the dialogue is as good as you can hope for given the material.

also, just because house is TRYING to be happy doesn’t mean he’s nicer. he was a full out dick to the husband, stole the book from the prof, and befriended alvie for mostly selfish intentions. all that was just in THIS episode.

no real complaints on this episode from me.

Made perfect sense to me. No way does someone with her schedule have time to travel around and compete in various marathons. Probably just keeps her mileage up and competes in 10k runs which would be way more abundant locally.

My daughter thinks she’s gorgeous too, but I don’t. All I see is angles and bones. She’s pretty, but not “hot”. Hot to me is a more voluptuous, curvy woman like Christina Hendricks.

It’s just a matter of opinion.

I personally don’t see much wrong with her acting, but her character is blah. The one time she stirred my interest is when she talked Wilson into stealing. She looked positively wicked. She knows how to work those cat eyes.

Agree on both counts. Bony does not do it for me. CH is stacked!

Sure different from my experience as a runner and knowing runners of all distances. The ultras I’ve known would run 10Ks infrequently if ever, and sure wouldn’t maintain a trophy case of their performance in them. 10Ks and ultras are entirely different creatures. In fact, ultras - and the folk who run them - wend to be quite differwent even from marathons.

If she doesn’t “have time to … compete in various [ultra]marathons,” than she isn’t an ultramarathoner, is she? Just saying, it would have been perfectly fine for them to simply refer to her as a “distance runner” or sumesuch. But if they are going to make the choice to use a precise term, they ought to pay attention to the supporting details.

I love Olivia Wilde’s eyes, and think she does some amazing things with them. I recall an episode early this season where she and Foreman were trying to work out their differences. When she said, “So, about dinner, I’m free tomorrow night,”, her eyes were wandering all over the place, but at the end they just locked onto his. I could totally believe that she was struggling with feelings of anger, love, and frustration for him.

I also loved this episode. Sure, the PofW took a backseat to House’s therapy, but I really like Andre Braugher’s character and was thrilled to see him again. He’s the first person who’s really been up to House’s level as far as dealing with his mind games and manipulative stunts. I loved it when he grabbed a magazine, nonchalantly licked his finger and started turning the pages. “Are you charging me for this?” “Yes.” It was awesome, and exactly what House needed right then and there. I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t show up again.

That makes perfect sense to me too.

Yeah, she has sharp knees.
