House season finale 5/23/11

don’t see any thread… Anyone? Anyone at all?

Compared to previous seasons, I was underwhelmed.

The way it was paced, I get the feeling the writers intended us to side with House in this, to feel his rage, to feel Cuddy deserved what he gave her. And I don’t. Too many narcissists in my personal life, I guess.

I actually thought last week was the finale so I didn’t even turn the tv on last night!

I think Taub got ME pregnant!

Between the horrendous ‘drama’ House and Cuddy were creating and the ludicrous PotW, the revelation that Taub’s ex was pregnant was the best part of the episode. That makes baby Jesus cry.

Also, no matter how good Hugh Laurie is, even he can’t save a piece of excrement posing as a script.

I think it’s too bad that this wasn’t the SERIES finale. The show still has funny moments but the shark has been jumped. Leaving House literally stranded on a beach somewhere would’ve made a good conclusion to the series.

This.

I love the show, but I think I’m done.

It did kind of feel like a series finale, didn’t it? Maybe they didn’t know if the show was going to be picked up when they wrote it?

Since we know the actress playing Cuddy is not returning but the show has one more season, I’m wondering how they’re going to handle it. She said something to the tune of “if he comes into my hospital I’ll have him arrested” so somehow she’ll have to be gone by the time he comes back from the beach…

Episode just dreadful–strong chance this is a dream sequence and Pamela will find Bobby in the shower.

Thought POTW was Patricia Neal, but that would have been a dream, too.

Hated the flashback device. It’s like they forgot the episode was supposed to be the finale, so they tacked those scenes on at the last minute to hold our interest during an otherwise completely typical patient-of-the-week episode.

Did the depiction of the aftermath at the beginning not really match what actually happened? Seemed like we were supposed to believe House went on a shooting rampage. But the big “SEASON-ENDING SHOCKER” could almost have been played as another wacky House stunt.

I was let down as well. They built it up like how it was going to end was the worst thing he’s ever done, but I felt like it was considerably less crazy than his self-surgery last week and I saw it coming. I guess the idea was that he wasn’t going to be self-destructive anymore, he would be outwardly destructive to others instead.

I kind of like the idea of leaving the series with House indeterminent like that, but I would have liked a bit more to it if that’s how they were going to leave it. I still don’t feel much of a cliff-hanger except for exactly how they will get him back at PPTH and handle Cuddy not being there. Will Cuddy decide to simply move on and not press charges or something? I just don’t see that happening.

The PotW also felt off. I really think they could have pushed the whole “you won’t know what symptoms are real or fake and which ones I’m not telling you” into a real focus for the episode rather than more or less resolving it quickly and using her character as analogue for House. I felt like they wasted a nifty idea. They could have still gotten the same effect by having an artist initially refuse treatment for the same reason and not have messed it all up with the symptom thing.

I dunno, except for the ending, it was pretty good I thought. POTW showed a sort of bizarro House, making the choice for love and happiness, and forcing him to ask himself why he didn’t. And then there was the whole “Mom” reference.

The last scenes felt like a tacked-on negotiation ploy with Edelstein rather than a considered and worthy continuation of the story line.

The only thing I can figure is that the final season becomes more of the psychological drama I was hoping for last season, with him in therapy and actually working through his crap. If there’s another trite 13-style drop back into normalcy: I’m out.

I do wonder if they’re leaving themselves open to just end it here.

I love House. I’ve been watching it every week since the pilot, and I’ve loved it even during the occasional klunker episode.

That said, I really wish they’d have packed it in this season. Aside from having no idea how they’re going to realistically extricate House from this latest predicament (pleads insanity? Even if Cuddy doesn’t press charges and he doesn’t end up in jail, how is he going to be able to keep his medical license after it comes out that he’s back on drugs again? Rehab? Been there, done that, got the T-shirt). The whole show is starting to feel like one big repeat. There’s only so much that can be done with House–he can go to rehab; he can fall in love (briefly); he can get off the pills and back on; he can have his leg hurt or not. But even the best friends in the world are finally going to say, “Dude, enough!” at some point.

I get it–House can’t be happy, because the whole premise of the show is that he’s not happy. But unrelenting unhappiness and assholery just gets old after awhile. It’s gotten old. I’ll be back for next season just because I feel like I should see it through, but unless they do something radically different, it will no longer be my “I’m really looking forward to this!” show.

Oh, and I couldn’t care less about Taub and his stupid pregnant wife and girlfriend. Boring. And Thirteen is boring too. The only interesting characters on the show for years other than House have been Wilson and Cuddy, and now they’re getting rid of Cuddy (who has grown much less interesting over the last season) and Wilson will only be in the show briefly.

Yeah, stick a fork in it–it’s done.

When compared with the season finale of The Mentalist this episode just plain sucks!

I agree with “underwhelming”. They spent the entire episode playing up this unprecedentedly shocking thing that House did - and the revelation was he drove a car into a house. That’s nothing too far beyond his normal routine of asshole behavior.

That almost makes sense. Especailly since when she took the brush from him she had that “aww what a cute but typical House-like gesture” on her face.

I could see it being a Series finale. House walking on the beach, starting over in life. Finding a new job, walking into a new hospital like a God. But we know it’s going to be the same shit, different day for him.
OTOH, I could see them using this as a negotiating device to get Cuddy back. Tell her that they plan to either move the show to a new hospital or cancel it all together.

Anyways, my guess is that they had already filmed the episode as a normal episode and added the flashbacks in to give Cuddy a reason to not be there next season.

I don’t buy the flashbacks being the only part that was added back in - it’s pretty hard to have someone drive a car into your house without SOMETHING drastic happening as a result. Maybe they added the whole final sequence plus the flashbacks…

They really painted themselves into a corner with this one. Presumably House is being charged with a number of felonies as a result of the crash - some legal type can jump in with suggestions but reckless endangerment and attempted murder are some that come to mind. So I don’t see how they’re going to bring House back, with or without Cuddy, unless (as another poster suggested), someone comes out of the shower and it was all a dream.

I agree it sounds like they were planning this as the series finale vs. the season finale.

Let’s not forget Wilson mentioning that each script House writes is a separate felony. There was a whole story just based on that a few years ago, it seemed odd that they would mention that. To me, that seemed like another thing that may have been added in later.

So…was House trying to kill them? He couldn’t possibly know that they weren’t still sitting at the dinner table. Regardless, that’s attempted murder, yes?

Sure, you’re going to get Attempted Manslaughter, Attempted Death by Auto, Recklessly Endangering Another Person*, Causing or Risking Widespread Injury or Damage, Criminal Mischief, Riding on Lands, and Damaging Property on Lands. And maybe Carjacking and Unlawful Taking of Means of Conveyance (was it Wilson’s car or House’s?).

But realistically, nobody was killed or seriously injured. So the most likely legal outcome would be some expensive lawyering and extended probation.

*Did you know that the New Jersey Penal Code specifically prohibits manufacturing a gold ball that contains acid or a corrosive fluid substance? Is that something that happens in New Jersey?
