House The Last Temptation 4/18/11

Well, this is the first time I’ve started a House thread.
I forgot what we decided last week WRT to Masters and whether or not she was sticking around. It appears as though if she does stay on board, she’ll officially be a House disciple which I’m not really looking forward too since that’s not what I paid for. I like her disagreeing, I like her always trying to take the moral high ground or at least thinking she’s taking the moral high ground…I suppose whether or not she actually is, would be up for debate. The way she always runs behind his back and the ways House has found to use that to his advantage have been interesting. It would seem odd though for her to leave now, they really seemed to invest a lot of time into her in this episode for her to be leaving any time soon. OTOH, it was called “The Last Temptation” Maybe it was “The Last Temptation” because she’ll no longer be tempted by House’s evil ways, she’s seen the light, she realizes that sometimes it’s works out better when you lie, cheat and steal. Does that make sense? Kind of like a high school kid who smokes. There’s no pressure to smoke if you already do it.
Of course, if all she does is goes to surgery but stays at PP, as we saw, it’s not really going to mean much, she’ll most likely still be jumping back and forth, and with an added skill set to boot.
Here’s the part that was bugging me, why couldn’t she let this go? Why was she digging her heels in? Why couldn’t she say “Look, if your daughter goes on this boat trip there’s a very real chance that she’ll die before she makes it back” and leave it at that.
ETA, have we had episodes where the POW goes still sick? How do the handle those? Do they do what they can to keep them there or do they let them go?

Having said that…I think I have a crush on her  I’ll miss her if she leaves.
Also, as I typed that part above about House sometimes manipulating her, I assume that’s what happened. I assume he knew she would ask Wilson for help and that he asked Wilson to tell the story about the medically induced coma/surgery.

EETA, looks like the next POTW is Donal Logue

I don’t think Masters is coming back. She wanted to both maintain her integrity and work on House’s team. She even reached the point of lying to stay on his team. But the final scene was about her realization that her integrity meant more to her than House did. She didn’t want to become the kind of person she would become if she stayed on his team so she chose to leave. Her victory was that she made the choice.

I hope the show doesn’t get rid of Masters. She made House’s team interesting for once.

Now we might go back to the dull and repetitive man club of Foreman, Chase, and Taub.

I will miss Masters, I think Amber Tamblyn was one of the better actors on the show. I was not impressed with Olivia Wilde’s acting abilities until last week, and I think the guy who plays Taub is very good.

Chase and Forman are one dimensional characters. They have two emotions, concern and disgust. I think the characters are constructed that way because of the abilities of the people playing them.

I see all of the cast as characters/actors except for House. I’ve never seen Laurie in any other role and I completely buy into the premise that he is real.

I’ll also miss the conflict that Tamblyn’s character brought to the show but if that time is filled with more House/Wilson antics then I’ll like that more. It seems very possible that Tamblyn will have a recurring role once or twice a season. I was almost believing that she and Chase would hook up and she would play a peripheral role that would bring about a change in his character.

By, the way, Hugh Laurie has a blues album coming out in the US and it’s very good. Lots of New Orleans influence. I think it’s already out in the UK.

I thought this was a great episode. I was pretty sure Masters wouldn’t be hanging around since 13 was back so the ending wasn’t a surprise, but I loved the way they got there.

“I know there’s a chicken under there.”

“Oh thank GOD!

In the scene where House deduces that 13 helped Masters by submitting to the procedure Masters needed to do, we see why House is the best of the best. He could tell, just by looking at 13 that she was hiding a headache. Any decent diagnostician can tell a person has a headache just by looking at them, but House can tell that you are hiding a headache. That’s diagnosing, baby!

I’m going to miss Masters even though I find her annoying. I think that very annoying-ness makes her an interesting character. I dislike Thirteen a lot (I find her boring, and I’m just sick to death of her stupid Huntington’s Disease and all its attendant subplots), and never was crazy about Foreman (he’s too grumpy). I like Taub and of course Wilson (I really hope we see more of him than we have been lately–the chicken thing was great!).

One thing about Amber Tamblyn, though–does anybody else get distracted by the fact that she always seems to be holding her mouth in a way that makes her lower face look weird? It’s like she needs tightening up down there or something. It’s very strange to look at. Maybe she’s just a little odd looking–that’s not a criticism. I think TV shows could use more odd-looking women instead of boring “hotties” (I put that in quotes because I don’t agree in this case) like Olivia Wilde.

I didn’t quite catch what Wilson said when House came by his office to pay up on the chicken bet. It sounded like “Next week - ferrets?”

Yup

According to this interview with Amber, she is definitely leaving…

I wish she was staying.

If the family ever found out what Masters had done, couldn’t they sue?

I’m sure they could, but I’m sure House would step in and say he ordered what ever drug she pushed for something medically necessary (she’s still a med student, didn’t turn in her log book) and she had a bad reaction to it or something along those lines, it caused the cancer to spread etc etc etc…

Yeah, and they did point out in the episode that when they did surgery they found that the cancer had spread to the lymph node in her neck, which meant it was moving very fast and she would certainly have died if she’d done the sail. I think House could be persuasive enough to make them realize that their daughter’s life (definitely, not hypothetically as it was before) is more important than a world record, should they make any noises about suing.

That’s one of the things that annoys me about the show. They always get away with the things they do. The writers give lip service to the fact that they’re breaking laws and medical ethics but there’s never any actual serious consequences. At worse, they get chewed out by Cuddy or you see somebody getting bailed out of jail with no further mention of the incident.

I’d have liked to see somebody take a real fall just once. Maybe do it when Kal Penn left the show. They should have had Kutner get arrested while breaking into somebody’s house looking for clues and then had him lose his medical license and get sued for everything he owned. Then have him commit suicide. See how the rest of the team reacts to the realization that following House destroyed Kutner’s life. That would have been a great episode.

masters looked superhot when she was wearing the surgical mask. i think her “ugliness” comes from her lack of a chin. otherwise, she’s a pretty good lookin chick.

I agree; her weak chin is her downfall. Not that I’m superficial or anything!..TRM

For some reason, I was hoping that they would have a shot back in House’s outer office where we could finally see every seat at that six person conference table filled.

How many episodes now since House took a vicodin? Three?

He popped vicodin in this episode.

Master’s realization in this episode is that she no longer ‘needs’ house - she’s actually outgrown him, as she learned the final lesson he was trying to teach (that sometimes, the only way to do the right thing is to do the wrong thing).

While surgery is interesting to her - its not the puzzle that diagnosing is - we haven’t seen the last of her unless she leaves medicine alltogether (as hinted at by the mother earlier in teh episode) .
