I am actually looking for what would be referred to as a “New Age” store - full of zodiac books, crystals, tarot decks, etc.
A nice corner coffee shop
and any other kind of store that caters to the “unusual” (I collect faeries, love craft stores, herb and tea shoppes, etc)
This is my first time in Houston and I’ll need something to do while the SO is working - and a few places we can go to together.
Which reminds me - i’ll be on my own for dinner since he has a work-dinn to attend tomorrow evening… any decent non-chain place to try out thats comfy - or has takeout/delivery?
omg - especially if there is a GOOD irish pub with irish food/entertainment?
Here are a few shops you may find interesting. I don’t know how close they are to where you will be staying.
For places you and your SO can go together Forbidden Gardens is interesting. There is the Downtown Aquarium. And of course there is The Houston Museum of Natural Science. Right now the special exhibit is Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia.
If you like to shop there is The Galleria mall.
There is the Tunnel System.
The Magick Cauldron is the biggest New Age/Wiccan store in town.
The Harp is a fun small Irish pub, but unless things have changed they don’t have food and they kicked out us session players in favor of folks watching football.
The Mucky Duck is the only Irish pub that has trad music, sessions on Wed night at 8. The other nights they usually have band and you have to pay to get in.
The Heights can be an interesting area to walk through on the weekends, lots of small shops. Rice Village is another area and is open every day, but it’s become more developed over the years and the small independent places have been pushed out. You can still get the best beer selection in town at the Ginger Man .
Downtown has several great theaters if you want music or plays.
Houston is a big place, what general area are you in?
Mucky Duck was good - yummy! Got it to go - the drive was a killer (60 min round) but worth it. I dont like the fact they charge for the entertainment… maybe it wouldnt be so bad if it started later so diners can sit and enjoy themselves. Even got the SO a dinner for later (beef & mushroom pie and bread pudding for dessert). Oh - and the brie - wow!
We’ll do the shopping tomorrow before heading back - unfortunately, it’s a short trip this round. Definate incentive to come back though =)
Thanks for the recommendations!
Cool, glad you had a good time and there’s no shortage of places to go shopping.
I enjoy the Duck, I should be there now playing my flute but I’m getting over a stomach bug and my wife is just getting, so it’s an evening at home for me.
