How can anyone vote for Trump in 2020? No. But Seriously

What’s your favorite of his accomplishments?

The number of judges he has appointed would be towards the top of my list.

Personally, I don’t see that as much of an accomplishment. I mean, I know it’s a good thing if you like conservative politics, since the people he’s hiring will do ideological conservative stuff on the bench but it’s simply something he can do without any effort.

In any case, that’s good to know. I constantly wonder what makes someone support such a creep.

“This sort of religious intolerance has no place in our neo-Nazi hate group!”

But that will be the primary reason many conservatives will vote Republican, regardless of it’s Donald Trump, Abe Lincoln, or Foghorn Leghorn on the ballot.

I see this when I spend time out in rural NJ / PA with my inlaws and their neighbors. Most of them of them are old, working class to middle class income, never travel more than 25 miles and all are white. The more affluent ones may have gone to state schools or even law or business school, but most are nth tier college educated at best. And they’re all kind of casually racist. If this is representative of small towns across the US, I can tell you why these people will vote for Trump (based on their conversations):

  1. They are kind of racist. They don’t care about BLM or immigration rights. What they see are violent anarchists torching storefronts and future sales clerks who will frustrate them with their foreign accents.

  2. They associate Democrats and Liberals with high taxes, ineffectual government, wealth redistribution, Marxism, anarchists, crime, corruption, bureaucracy, appeasement, political correctness, cancel culture, gun control, religious persecution, and elitism.

  3. They associate Republicans and Conservatives with hard work, limited government, success, Capitalism, order, law enforcement, business, support for the troops, American exceptionalism, free speech, gun rights, good Christian values, and the greatness that is America.

  4. They are kind of dumb, uneducated, and unsophisticated. I mean good luck explaining economic theory to my mother in law.

  5. They are extremely proud and defensive. Sure, you could explain to them point by point how everything they know about points 2 and 3 is wrong, or at least more nuanced. But they would just view it as a personal attack on their beliefs and just dig their heels in further. It’s why Fox News is so effective. It creates a reasonable doubt so that conservatives can reconcile the horrible things Republican leaders do with their own values by saying Democrats are worse.

Or it’s even simpler than this and many Trump supporters are just selfish assholes who emulate Trump and think he’s doing a great job pissing off liberals.

I think it’s quite simple: they love him because he hates the same people that they do.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Pelosi going to Chinatown. The people there are, mostly, Chinese-AMERICANS. Mostly quite poor. Very few of them had recently been to China. The risk there was no higher than in any other urban neighborhood.

I’m not aware of a single case of COVID-19 that spread from San Francisco Chinatown in February.

Well, Republicans can cite lots of things Trump has done. Appointing Gorsuch and Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Supporting Israel, including moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Killing the Iran deal, along with General Soleimani. His attempts at deregulation. Appointing more than 140 conservative judges. Rebuilding the military. Confronting China. Cancelling a number of Obama executive orders.

These are all traditional conservative policies. Even the people who are never-Trump will acknowledge that he’s done things they like - they just think he himself is unfit for office and a bigger danger to the country than the good he’s done.

I get that many people who call themselves conservative (I mean, they aren’t actually conservative, an actual conservative would support universal healthcare) like those things. Especially since the GOP spent 8 years defining, “conservative” as whatever was the opposite of Obama’s stated position.

They like the stupid and self-destructive policies he’s been able to do, yeah I get that, and they think those stupid policies are more than worth being immoral.

Not the cages again…thought this was fact checked and they were under a Obama…a Trump stopped the separation of children .

Obama kept unaccompanied children until their families were found. Trump took them away from their families.

Trump separated kids from their families and intentionally did not keep track of which kids belonged to which families. How can you be so stupendously wrong about this? Is that what it takes to support Trump?

Can’t believe they’re really pushing this “Joe Biden’s America” narrative to things happening … in Donald Trump’s America.

I have never met a Trump supporter who wasn’t massively misinformed. Except for single issue / greedy types, of course.

For some reason Republicans have a lock on being the law and order party as well as the fiscally responsible party. They have, provably, been nothing of the sort yet for some reason people still buy into it.

Then suburban housewife sees black people looting and is just sure they’ll be on her street in the next few weeks. Democrats talk about defunding the police while republicans want to trot out the national guard.

Sadly most people do not consider the nuances or details. They read the headlines and go with that.

I thought this was very well said. It’s an accurate description of all the Trumpists in my family.

After watching the RNC on YouTube, their algorithm presumed I had an interest in conservative content, and presented me with several videos with conservatives reacting to the RNC and other videos just expressing general conservative viewpoints. I watched many of them.

I’m convinced the majority of people, conservatives and liberals alike, do not consume media expressing opposing viewpoints. If your main sources of information are the RNC, conservative news outlets, and conservative content on the Internet, then you’re going to get the impression that Trump is the better candidate, and that electing Biden will be a poor choice, both for you personally and the US in general. Frankly I have very little difficulty seeing how people choose to vote for Trump, and I will not be surprised if he is reelected. The messaging I see from liberals, and here on the SDMB, is simply not reaching conservatives.

If Trump wins it will be because of a) voter suppression, b) he and Republicans muscle their way to power using illegitimate means, and c) there are enough ignoramuses out there who value keeping America in the hands of white men more than having a functioning country.

End of story.

I’m soooo done with getting panicky over bad optics every time minorities, gays, and women make straight white men and Christian women uncomfortable.

I get Trump fanboy shit even barely watching anything even remotely right wing. Sure, I watch the odd YouTube of a Sean Hannity or Trump meltdown for the same reason I watch car accidents and tornado videos. But there’s nothing in my viewing history that ought to suggest I’m a Trump supporter. It just probably knows that I’m a white male in my 40s and that I’ve lived in swing states the last few years. The algorithm likely wants to check to see if you and I are persuadable.
