How can I silence my laptop?

Long story short(er): I’m a paralegal who will be participating in a month-long trial beginning at the end of the month. I type fairly quickly, and so my primary duty will be using a laptop to take notes that are quite a bit less than an exact transcript, but a very decent approximation of the examination of witnesses. The attorneys really like having immediate access to a rough transcript of the day’s proceedings rather than having to wait for (and pay the exorbitant fees of) the court reporter to provide an official transcript.

So anyway, this past Friday, we had a hearing that gave us the opportunity to do a trial (heh) run. And while they appreciated the work I did, the two attorneys I’m working with in this case were bothered by the amount of noise being made as I typed. They asked if there was anything I could do to quiet the noise of the keys, and I figured I’d turn to the Dope community to see what ideas are out there.

I’m using a Dell Latitude D620, if that matters. Thanks!

Almost all notebook keys will be clicky. Get aUSB membrane keyboard and plug it into your notebook. Most are effectively silent.

Pricing varies considerably. Lots of models available. Have no idea as to better or worse brands re this product.

Couldn’t cut court reporter school, huh?
Okay, that was mean. Sorry.
Anyway, i remembered seeing this a while back. The “cilcks” are adjustible. Maybe the lawyers will pop for one.
Peace,
mangeorge

My MacBook keys do not make very much noise…

Get some dictation software so you can talk to your computer instead. There is no way that that will annoy anyone.

Cute. Most of the reporters I’ve chatted with make great money but find their jobs incredibly boring. No thanks.

The invisible keyboard seems pretty damn cool, and I bet they’d buy it for me if I made a case for it. But I don’t know that my drumming on the desk would be any less annoying. I guess I could put some kind of soft pad down in front of me to eliminate the noise. I should look and see how well those work – might be worth the investment.

astro, I’m a little disturbed by the age of the keyboard you linked to, but I’ll look into the general concept.

Silent & Quiet Keyboards for Courtroom & Courts

Wow…nice find. I’m going to see if I can talk them into spending the money for that.
